Season 1 of “Dune: Prophecy” has concluded, leaving fans puzzled with numerous unanswered questions following the unexpected plot twists that pave the way for the upcoming second season. The announcement of Season 2 was made just before the finale aired, and now, with so many secrets revealed, various speculations are circulating about where the narrative will progress next. This series is a spin-off from Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic masterpieces “Dune” and the upcoming “Dune: Part Two,” set 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). The show delves into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, who were known as the Sisterhood during this era, and their political maneuvers to control the Imperium according to their objectives. The plot primarily revolves around the Harkonnens’ ascension to power and the roots of their animosity with the Atreides. However, a more formidable adversary emerged, casting a shadow over their enmity as he posed a threat to everything the Sisterhood had been striving towards.

In Season 1, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) discover shocking secrets about their past that compel them to confront a formidable adversary threatening the Sisterhood’s survival. Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a soldier who endured the perils of Arrakis, undermines the Sisterhood’s grip on Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) and wields an enigmatic power unknown to Valya and Tula. The intricate web of deceit starts to fray as Valya makes a desperate move to rescue Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), inadvertently involving Keiran Atreides (Chris Mason). As the season concludes, Corrino, having uncovered the Sisterhood’s machinations, takes his life, leaving Valya, Ynez, and Keiran to journey to Arrakis to expose the truth about the force controlling Desmond. With many mysteries still unresolved, Season 2 promises an intriguing continuation of this complex narrative.

Will the Harkonnen Sisters’ Authority Over the Sisterhood Be Challenged?

Previously mentioned is Sister Lila (Chloe Lea), a young apprentice, who underwent a perilous ceremony known as the Agony. In this ritual, a Sister must consume the Water of Life, which is actually poison from a baby sandworm, and transform the toxic substance within her body. The ritual was successful, allowing her ancestors to take charge of her physical form, enabling communication with Mother Superior Raquella and Sister Dorotea. By the finale, Dorotea seized control over Lila’s body, and memories of her own demise began resurfacing, potentially causing more complications for Valya. Lila cautions fellow Sisters about Valya’s teachings and her intentions to manipulate the Imperium through a genetic breeding program that necessitates the employment of a Thinking Machine, an illegal technology.

Dorotea consistently opposed Raquella’s initiative and sabotaged the device. She navigated through the facility and wound up at the site of her own demise. She disclosed that Valya and Tula are not as they seem, and the Sisters serve merely as tools for them. Their concern extends only so far, and Dorotea successfully communicates this, sparking a rebellion against Valya and Tula. This uprising suggests that Season 2 of Dune: Prophecy will depict Valya and Tula losing the Sisterhood’s support, as half of the Reverend Mothers have perished. It remains uncertain how long Dorotea will control Lila’s form before another figure like Raquella assumes control, potentially rendering Dorotea’s actions futile.

Who Will Be the Next Ruler of the Imperium in ‘Dune: Prophecy?’

In Season 1, Emperor Corrino could arguably be seen as one of the most sorrowful characters. The shocking revelation that the Sisterhood had been orchestrating his life since his very birth left a deep impact on him. He was forced to confront the truth that all his supposed accomplishments were carefully planned by someone else, and even his failures were not truly his own. Everything he believed he had earned was tainted, and then he learned that the woman he deeply cared for was also involved in the plot that led to his downfall.

In a turn of events, Corrino confronts Sister Francesca, his lover, following Valya’s instructions to assassinate him using a poisoned tool. Reluctant to harm him, Francesca attempts to clarify her plans diverge from Valya’s, but Corrino’s suspicion leads him to draw a knife against Francesca. In an unexpected twist, she discloses that the imprint prevents him from killing her, causing him instead to stab himself with the blade, thus hastening his own demise. Whether this was part of Valya’s plan is yet unclear, but it certainly served her purpose. As Corrino lies dying in Francesca’s arms, Empress Natalya steps up behind her and ends Francesca’s life with the poisoned weapon.

With Ynez leaving the planet, the pressing issue becomes who will claim the throne. The second season will feature a narrative similar to “Game of Thrones,” as Natalya competes for the throne, until Constantine (Josh Hueston) discovers the passing of his parents. Initially appointed as commander of the Imperium’s fleet, Constantine was away from the planet during the events that transpired. Despite his mother being largely absent during his childhood and his father not recognizing his potential, Constantine held a deep affection for his parents, and their deaths will not be easily accepted. The power struggle between Constantine and Natalya could lead to internal conflicts within the Imperium, which has historically led to disarray under monarchies.

Arrakis Holds the Answer for Desmond Hart in ‘Dune: Prophecy’

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but feel drawn back to the mesmerizing world of Arrakis. In the upcoming season 2 of Dune: Prophecy, my curiosity will be piqued as Valya delves deeper into unraveling the mysteries surrounding Desmond’s extraordinary powers. During their fateful encounter, Valya bears witness to the harrowing experiences Desmond faced on this spice-laden planet and the colossal sandworm that set his destiny ablaze.

She also sees him undergoing a procedure that replaces one of his eyes with a Thinking Machine with the intent of spreading the Ominous Plague, which is triggered by fear, but she can’t distinguish a face. She knows that she’ll find answers in Arrakis, and Ynez and Keiran are tagging along. Season 2 will unmask this mystery figure and will see Valya in search of an antidote to neutralize the plague and stop Desmond Hart from sabotaging the Sisterhood’s plans. Dune: Prophecy is streaming on Max.
