Martin’s “Game of Thrones,” I was immediately drawn to the comparison between this new HBO series and the iconic fantasy show.

Calling a space-set, epic, fantastical drama series “Game of Thrones in [BLANK]” is quite natural, especially when the show airs on HBO, the network known for adapting George R.R. Martin’s works. However, instead of getting upset about it, the showrunner of “Dune: Prophecy “, Alison Schapker, fully grasps the inclination to label her series as a space version of “Game of Thrones“. In fact, she sees it as a compliment.

In a recent conversation with The Wrap, Schapker stated that “Game of Thrones” was an engaging series to watch. He added that it’s a significant honor to be compared to such a show. Essentially, he views this comparison as a sign that they’re competing at the highest level.

She continued, “It could indeed be a fitting analogy. However, I also believe there are numerous unique elements in Dune that make it stand out as its own entity. I’m eager for the time when we move past the importance of who sits on the throne – although that is significant – and start to appreciate other aspects that will set it apart. The ‘in space’ aspect should develop more fully for readers.

What Is ‘Dune: Prophecy’ About?

The series has sparked a great deal of debate among critics who have already evaluated it. As of now, it boasts an approval rating of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. It narrates the story of a sisterhood that eventually transformed into the Bene Gesserit, a group that existed 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides’ birth (the protagonist from the Dune movies).

In the timeframe of 83 years following the destruction of the final thinking machines during the Battle of Corrin, as depicted in the book “Dune: Sisterhood” and its sequels, the novel “Dune: Prophecy” unfolds. This is a period when several powerful and illustrious houses throughout the cosmos are engaged in fierce conflict with each other, striving to establish a new ruling authority or Imperium.

This tale primarily focuses on Valya Harkonnen, portrayed by Emily Watson, and her sister Tula Harkonnen, played by Olivia Williams. They are prominent figures within the Bene Gesserit order, a position that eventually leads their family lineage to become the ruthless antagonists synonymous with fans of Dune. It is this transformation that Schapker finds compelling and intriguing.

She clarified, “We strongly associate ourselves with the Harkonnen sisters, but we’re not just tied to them. Instead, our aim is to build a vibrant universe centered around them, filled with characters that resonate and matter to viewers. Each character on the show should have a relatable aspect, be it something to cheer for, empathize with, or even find controversial at times. I believe television provides ample opportunity to delve deeper into these elements.

She further commented, “It seems intriguing to me to consider the origins of the ominous Harkonnens from a somewhat ambiguous starting point – a gray area, if you will. Witnessing how this development unfolds is, I believe, both captivating and more thought-provoking for future narratives.
