As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving landscape of television and film, I must say that the recent appearances of Archie Barnes in both “House of the Dragon” and “Dune: Prophecy” have left me quite intrigued. This young actor’s journey is reminiscent of a comet streaking across the night sky – bright, captivating, and leaving a trail of wonder in its wake.
Since the final episode of “Game of Thrones” aired in 2019, causing much debate, it became one of the most-watched series ever. Consequently, many television networks have been eager to find a new show that could replicate its allure of political machinations, brutal action, and unrelenting storytelling. Over the past five years, numerous shows have been dubbed as “the next Game of Thrones”, such as FX’s “Shogun” and HBO’s prequel series “House of the Dragon. Now, with the launch of “Dune: Prophecy,” another grand production has joined the competition.
Many shows have tried to emulate the success of “Game of Thrones”, but few have approached its cultural impact. It remains to be seen if “Dune: Prophecy” will fill the void left by “Game of Thrones”, especially considering some familiar faces from the latter series. The third episode, titled “Sisterhood Above All,” boasts the most noticeable link to “Game of Thrones” thus far.
Note: the following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy.
Mark Addy’s Influential Role in Dune: Prophecy
Actor Mark Addy but recently featured in “Sisterhood Above All”, portraying Evgeny Harkonnen, uncle to key characters Valya and Tula. They find themselves in exile on Lankiveil, a frosty world primarily known for its furry whale catching and processing industry. There, he clashes with Valya significantly, as her aim to restore the Harkonnens’ status within the cosmic hierarchy by challenging the Atreides family conflicts with the family’s more cautious strategy. This tension escalates when Griffin (Earl Cave), their brother, is slain by an Atreides, leading Valya and Tula to contemplate both immediate and long-term retaliation against the Atreides clan.
In a different phrasing: When Valya employs her “voice” to dominate her mother, Evgeny labels her as a “witch” and forces her out of their household, resulting in her joining the Sisterhood. It’s hinted that they haven’t crossed paths since then, but the final scene of the episode shows the grown Valya, now titled Reverend Mother, making an unexpected visit to her elderly uncle for motives not yet disclosed.
Where You’ve Seen Him Before
Addy is a well-known figure, especially due to his portrayal as King Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones. He was the initial ruler of Westeros, married to Cersei Lannister. A man with substantial cravings, Robert meets his end during a hunting accident, triggering a power struggle over the throne between his siblings, illegitimate offspring, and the progeny of Cersei, fathered not by Robert but by her brother Jaime. Despite his death at the close of season 1, the repercussions of his demise echo throughout the remainder of the series.
Addy has appeared in numerous productions spanning decades, including iconic roles from the ’90s and 2000s such as A Knight’s Tale, The Full Monty, and even portraying a young Fred Flintstone in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas. With a career that spans over three decades in both the UK and US, it’s only natural to expect his continued presence on our screens.
Archie Barnes
In the realm of the Game of Thrones universe, a fresh face is Archie Barnes, who has recently doubled the number of monumental series on his acting repertoire this year. Previously seen in House of the Dragon, Barnes portrayed Ser Oscar Tully, the leader of House Tully of Riverrun, one of Westeros’ prominent houses. As the grandson of Lord Grover Tully, he stands as the next potential ruler, despite his youth. His screen time has been limited thus far, appearing in only two episodes of the second season; however, it is plausible that he will reappear as the story unfolds further.
In the story “Dune: Prophecy”, Barnes character transforms as Albert, a young Atreides who is the lone survivor after Tula Harkonnen orchestrates a massacre. While Valya (Albert’s sister) plays a long strategic game by joining the Sisterhood, Tula seeks swift retribution for her brother’s death by assuming a new identity and courting a young Atreides named Orry (Milo Callaghan). Invited to join the annual Atreides family hunting trip, she has an opportunity to meet every house member. Demonstrating her skills by extracting poison from hunted animals and using it to humanely euthanize an injured horse, Tula later exploits this same poison to assassinate the entire Atreides family in one tragic incident by contaminating their drinks during a festive gathering.
In another scenario, Tula initially intended to eliminate all the Atreides. However, young Albert didn’t drink the poisoned drinks, and when he stumbled upon the massacre in the morning, Tula showed some empathy by sparing his life. Later, she deceived her sister, claiming she had wiped out the entire Atreides family, when in reality, they managed to survive. This act of mercy from Tula ultimately played a significant role in the future; by letting one Atreides live, the family was able to reproduce and continue ruling the galaxy. If Tula had killed Albert that day, it’s plausible that none of the events in “Dune” would have transpired, unless there were perhaps other Atreides who chose not to attend the festivities and stayed at home instead.
1) We’ll find out if Albert reappears or not, but either way, his character plays a crucial part in the broader narrative. Meanwhile, Barnes has already proven himself with notable roles in his growing career, so it’s certain he’ll keep impressing us further. Don’t miss Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, Dune: Prophecy and more on Max.
