Dungeon & Fighter: Arad is the DNF franchise's pitch into the world of open-world adventure

  • Dungeon & Fighter: Arad is a newly-announced entry in the DNF franchise
  • It looks set to go in a different direction to its predecessors with open-world adventure instead
  • Cribbing a bit from the MiHoYo playbook? Maybe.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the announcement of Dungeon & Fighter: Arad. The DNF series has been a staple in my gaming diet for years, offering countless hours of fun and camaraderie with friends.

In my opinion, the Dungeon & Fighter series stands as Nexon’s main line of games. With millions of players and numerous spin-offs, it might not be as popular in Western regions, but there’s no question it’s a cornerstone of their collection. It comes as no surprise, then, that a new spin-off, Dungeon & Fighter: Arad, is being developed.

For the first look, we were treated to a teaser trailer for this 3D open-world adventure, which made its premiere at The Game Awards. This trailer provided a sneak peek into the expansive world and a variety of (as yet unnamed) characters that dedicated fans of DNF have already speculated could be potential classes based on past installments in the series.

In Dungeon & Fighter: Arad, you can anticipate an open-world environment for exploration, intense combat action, and numerous character classes to select. As expected, the narrative is given significant importance, featuring fresh characters to encounter and converse with, along with a smattering of challenging puzzles throughout.

Beyond the dungeon

For most viewers, there isn’t much more to analyze from this trailer. However, given the atmosphere it evokes, it wouldn’t be unanticipated if we’re encountering something similar to the patterns that have been established and widely recognized in MiHoYo’s collection of games.

As a dedicated gamer, I was well aware that Arad was coming our way, but all we had to go on was its name. And while the initial glimpses have been enticing, I can’t help but feel it might veer off course a bit too much for fans of the series who are accustomed to the familiar. However, there’s no disputing the high-quality production, and the rumors swirling around the Peacock Theatre (where The Game Awards were being held) hint that Nexon is putting a lot of faith in this game being a hit.
