Dutch Royal Series ‘Maxima’ Sells Worldwide Ahead of Second Season

As a royal drama enthusiast who has binge-watched countless series about European monarchies, I can confidently say that “Máxima” is set to be the crown jewel of international television! With its captivating storyline, based on real-life events within the Dutch royal family, and the undeniable charm of its Argentinian lead, this show is destined for greatness.

Global broadcasting companies are heavily invested in the popular royal drama series featuring Máxima. The Dutch series has gained significant traction, with distribution company Beta Film securing agreements in over 50 territories, including a deal with Australia’s public broadcaster SBS.

The series, debuted at Canneseries TV festival earlier this year, can be likened to a Dutch version of ‘The Crown’. It’s a dramatic retelling of actual incidents involving the Dutch royal family. Based on Marcia Luyten’s 2022 novel ‘Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland‘, the show primarily focuses on the love story between Máxima Zorreguieta, an Argentinian woman, and Willem-Alexander, the future King of the Netherlands. Eventually, in real life, she marries Willem-Alexander to become Queen Maxima.

Beta has successfully distributed the initial 6-episode run of the series Máxima throughout Scandinavia. This includes agreements with TV2 in Denmark, TV4 in Sweden, MTV in Finland, and YES network for Israel. Additionally, a multi-region deal was struck with the FOX Network covering central Europe.

The series titled “Máxima” made its debut on RTL Netherlands’ streaming platform Videoland, and has been a ratings success in Italy on public television station Rai, as well as in Spain on Atresmedia. In Latin America, it ranked among the top 10 shows on HBO Max.

The second installment of the series will commence filming in 2021 across the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Austria. The storyline revolves around Máxima, tracing her journey from wedding preparations to her coronation a decade later when Willem-Alexander ascends the throne upon Queen Beatrix’s abdication. Amidst the courtly family politics and her personal career aspirations, Máxima faces internal struggles. Saskia Diesing and Joosje Duk reprise their directorial roles for season two, while Rifka Lodeizen and Daan Gielis pen the scripts.

At the upcoming Mipcom Cannes global television market this month, Beta plans to sell both seasons of the show “Máxima” to overseas customers.

Maxima has been jointly created by Rachel van Bommel from Millstreet Films, along with FBO and Beta Film.
