Although critics didn’t find Moana 2 as impressive as the first movie, Disney Animation Studios probably isn’t too worried about their reviews at this point. What truly matters to them is how well the film performs at the box office, and it seems that the sequel to Moana has excelled in this regard. It’s now one of the 56 movies in history to surpass $1 billion in revenue, a significant achievement. This success has made it one of Dwayne Johnson‘s highest-grossing films ever, and he’s expressing his gratitude to the fans.
Box office estimates from this past weekend helped put Moana 2 over the top and Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to thank fans of his film for making it such a big success. Johnson sees Moana 2’s box office as the embrace of Polynesian culture by a global audience. It’s hard to argue based on the numbers. Johnson wrote…
In a remarkable achievement, Moana 2 has surpassed a historic billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office. We are deeply grateful for the global appreciation of our Polynesian heritage. By inspiring children and adults alike from all cultures and backgrounds to never stop striving, we believe in the power of resilience (grit) and inner strength (mana). Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved; you’re simply amazing!
Reflecting on the fact that only about 100 films have ever earned over $1 billion at the box office, it’s clear that this is an exclusive group. However, in the past year alone, Disney has managed to add three movies to this elite club: first, Deadpool and Wolverine, followed by Inside Out 2. The original Moana film was a box office hit, but it didn’t even come close to reaching the billion-dollar mark, with global earnings totaling less than $650 million before its run ended.
In simpler terms, if nothing else, the release of Moana 2 serves as validation for those who decided to significantly alter the project. At first, fans were expecting a Moana series on Disney+, but earlier this year, Bob Iger announced that the original plan for a series had been transformed into a feature film. Given the complex nature of streaming economics, it’s hard to envision a Moana series earning $1 billion on Disney+.

It seems highly probable that enthusiasts eager for more of the story from Moana can look forward to it in the future, given the hints towards further sequels in Moana 2’s post-credits scene. With the positive reaction to the film, it’s hard to envision Disney not considering this as a potential opportunity. In essence, a third installment of Moana almost seems inevitable.
A key point of interest for Disney is whether the success of Moana 2 will influence the performance of their other upcoming sequels. This year, Walt Disney Animation is set to release Zootopia 2, a follow-up to a film that earned over $1 billion at the box office initially. In addition, we have not just Frozen 3 in the pipeline but also Frozen 4, sequels to movies that, when they were first released, held the title of highest-grossing animated films ever made.
