As a dedicated fan who’s followed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s career since his WWE days, I must say, this man never ceases to amaze me! His dedication to his craft is nothing short of extraordinary. The way he transformed himself into Maui for the live-action Moana is just another testament to his unparalleled commitment.
Dwayne Johnson went above and beyond to metamorphose into the character Maui for the upcoming live-action version of Moana.
In the upcoming Thomas Kail-directed film “Moana” due for release in 2026, the actor who lends his voice to the larger-than-life demigod character confirmed to Extra that he wore a bodysuit to enhance the realism of his physique to match Maui’s.
I’ve got to admit, it takes some effort to get into this gear,” I happily concede, “And the fact that you noticed my muscle growth is a testament to how impressive it must have been, since it wasn’t obvious.
Pictures taken on the movie set were earlier released by photographers, causing discussions on social media about whether the actor, who is already quite muscular, was wearing a bodysuit. In these images, Johnson appears to have an exceptionally large physique, reminiscent of a demigod, and sporting all of Maui’s tattoos.
However, Johnson elaborated that it required “several hours daily for transformation and dressing up” to truly embody the cherished character completely.
As a gamer, if I stumbled upon images capturing us playing outdoors, I’d find myself muttering, ‘Oh no, we’ve been spotted!’ because we were setting up barriers to keep the paparazzi at bay. However, they somehow managed to get into boats and snap photos from unexpected angles.
In 2016, Johnson lent his voice to Maui in both “Moana” and its recently released sequel, “Moana 2”. Already, the sequel is breaking records, claiming the largest Thanksgiving opening of all time for a five-day holiday, among other achievements.
In the upcoming live-action film, Johnson will share the screen with newcomer Catherine Laga’aia, who portrays the main character. Auli‘i Cravalho provided the voice for Moana in the animated versions. The actor from “Red One” remarked that working on this live-action project was an enlightening experience.
Johnson clarified that he was well acquainted with the character Maui. He recognized his voice, understood his essence, knew his origins. He felt confident about it, saying ‘I got it.’ However, upon setting foot on the live-action set as Maui, he immediately realized that this was a completely new experience. This realization came from the fact that instead of dealing with an animated character, he was now interacting with a real person – a living, breathing individual, made of flesh and blood.
