EA Is Adding Microtransactions to a Closed Alpha — Because of Course They Are

Developers of the game undergoing closed alpha testing are introducing microtransactions. Players have noticed the appearance of an in-game store offering San Van Bucks, a premium currency used for purchasing cosmetic items.

According to reports by Insider Gaming, game developer Full Circle is introducing an in-game shop offering premium currency. This new feature is intended to improve the user experience when buying items from the Skate store, as claimed by Full Circle. During the initial access phase of Skate, players will have the opportunity to utilize this shop.

The progress made in the game might be wiped during the closed alpha phase at any point in time. However, once Skate transitions into early access, all purchases will be refunded and the San Van Bucks spent by players will be returned to them. To ensure these can be utilized when early access begins, testers should continue playing using their current account throughout this closed alpha period.

If you’ve been pondering the reason behind Skate, a cherished franchise, incorporating microtransactions, your initial assumption that Electronic Arts (EA) intends to transform it into a live-service, free-to-play game is spot on.

Originally unveiled in 2020 as Skate 4, the game is now simply called Skate. The CEO of EA mentioned back in 2022 that it would be releasing soon. Now, well into 2025, it’s anticipated that this newest installment in the series will debut this year, although initially only as an early access version.

Back in 2022, when I learned that the long-awaited new installment in our beloved series – last seen in 2010 – was to follow a live-service model, I must admit, my reactions were a mix of excitement and hesitation. After all, free-to-play live-service games have been around for some time now.

Regardless of the strict embargo, certain playtesters’ feedback has surfaced on social media. Many critics argue that the developers prioritized creating an in-game shop over addressing fundamental gameplay problems.

2025 is when we can expect the game “Skate” to be launched. It will be available on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms.
