As a seasoned gamer and sneaker enthusiast with over two decades of collecting under my belt, I must say that the Nike Kobe 5 Protro “Year of the Mamba” in University Red is truly a sight to behold! The intricate design details, such as the golden snake wrapping around the lateral Swoosh and the striking contrast between the red upper and black accents, are reminiscent of the fierce spirit that Kobe Bryant brought to the game.

In the future, it’s anticipated that Nike Basketball’s Kobe line will take on a more significant part in their 2025 strategies. Over the past fiscal year, this line expanded almost fourfold in size. The recently re-released silhouettes, Kobe 5 and 9 Elite Protro, are examples of its growth. The Kobe 5 is scheduled to honor the Year of the Snake with a spotted purple colorway, and there’s also a “University Red” version in the works, as illustrated above.
In the same manner as the previously mentioned “Eggplant” model, a golden snake adorns the side Swoosh that’s presented in black. Unlike other pairs, this one features an extra touch of gold on the toe area, along with the tongue details. The majority of the upper and midsole is dominated by a vibrant shade of “University Red”.
Currently, as I type, Nike Basketball has yet to disclose the launch schedule for the two “Year of the Mamba” color variations of the Kobe 5 Protro shoes. Keep an eye out for updates, including images of both pairs, as we anticipate that the “University Red” design will become available on January 16 of next year via Nike SNKRS and selected retailers at a starting price of $190 USD.
