Eaton Fire Puts L.A. Broadcast Towers at Risk

One fire currently raging in Los Angeles poses a risk of disabling several television and radio broadcasting facilities.

The Eaton Fire, causing destruction in Altadena, is approaching Mount Wilson, a location that houses multiple broadcast towers. Notably, the NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, KTLA, and KMEX (Univision) stations all have transmitters on this mountain peak.

He explained that the structures shown were repeater towers, which aren’t just utilized by news and radio stations in Southern California, but also play a crucial role during emergencies. In such situations, these towers serve as communication channels for the police, fire department, and other emergency services. Currently, the Mt. Wilson Observatory is under evacuation, with only necessary personnel and firefighters present. As reported on the news, the Eaton fire is moving towards Mount Wilson. The observatory has posted an update on its Instagram page: “There are firefighters on the premises, but the power outage at the Observatory has restricted communication. We’re keeping a close eye on the situation and will provide updates as we receive them. Thank you for your concern.

If the fire spreads to the broadcast towers, the TV and radio stations will temporarily go off-air until additional backup towers are activated elsewhere. However, it’s important to note that a majority of consumers don’t rely on a broadcast antenna for their TV signal, instead opting for cable, satellite, or streaming services, which should remain unaffected.
