Eden Sher Broke Down What Happened In Her The Middle Spinoff Pilot, And Now I'm Even More Bummed That We Never Saw It

As a huge fan of “The Middle” and Sue Heck’s journey, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and excitement all at once upon hearing Eden Sher’s recent revelation about the spinoff that almost was. You see, I’ve been rewatching the show with anticipation for their new podcast, “The Middling,” which premieres on July 31. And in getting ready for it, I stumbled upon a goldmine of information about this potential Sue Heck sequel series.

Certainly!

To provide some background, Sher and Ciarlelli are launching a new podcast focused on rewatching “The Middle” starting July 31. In preparation for this, they shared some intriguing news about a potential spinoff. They mentioned that they had filmed an episode, believing it would be commissioned. Unfortunately, when Sue’s show didn’t get approved for production, it was disappointing for both of them. As Sher expressed in her Instagram post:

I must admit, it was heart-wrenchingly disappointing when things didn’t work out for us. We were all deeply affected, feeling a mixture of sadness and shock.

Both of them were confident that the show would be renewed for more episodes, as they held strong beliefs in its potential. Frankly, I would have shared their optimism after listening to the Sue Heck actress discuss the pilot.

Essentially, Sue travels to Chicago with the goal of saving a hotel. The ensemble of characters was truly captivating. Later on, when Sue is at her most discouraged, Brad appears.

Additionally, she shared that the new series is set some years after “The Middle,” following Sue’s life post-college. It seems fitting for Sue’s character to be managing a hotel and trying to save it, as this storyline aligns well with her quirky and unpredictable nature. The unexpected setting filled with intriguing characters would have provided an excellent backdrop for Sher’s unique blend of physical and witty humor.

The two added that Brad dramatically arrived via taxi and enthusiastically entered the episode. Later on, Brock Ciarlelli shared how the episode concluded.

I’ve lived through many experiences, some mundane and predictable, like our daily routine, and others filled with excitement and surprise, such as dancing in the snowy streets of Chicago. Each moment, big or small, adds to the richness of my life story. And that charming little episode in Chicago, ending with a gentle snowfall, will forever remain etched in my memory.

That sounds like buckets of fun, and it’s a bummer we never got to see it!

I was looking forward to watching Sue develop further as she approached maturity in “The Middle.” However, she still exhibited childlike behaviors at times, leaving me eager to witness her continued growth. Moreover, given the strong bond between Eden Sher and Patricia Heaton in real life, a spinoff could have offered delightful appearances from other beloved “The Middle” cast members.

In addition, they discussed the photoshoot they were part of, and the actress Sue playfully commented, “I look pretty good here,” and indeed she does, as demonstrated in the entire Instagram video she shared.

Personally, I found the finale of “The Middle” satisfying, but learning that this episode was once a potential pilot has left me craving for more.

Fortunately, even though it’s disappointing that Sue and Brad won’t be on TV with us, we’re excitedly looking forward to hearing plenty from Eden Sher and Brock Ciarlelli through their new podcast, “The Middling.” As they share amusing behind-the-scenes anecdotes from their time on the ABC sitcom and spill some intriguing details about the nearly made spinoff, we’ll be sure to keep you informed.

If you’re looking for more episodes of “The Middle” to watch, you have the option to stream it with a Peacock or Amazon Prime subscription. So, feel free to go back and revisit this charming sitcom at your own convenience.
