Regrettably, although innovative, Elden Ring: Nightreign seems somewhat peculiar. It lacks the familiarity one would expect from Elden Ring, even with the same name, and a significant contributor to this dissimilarity lies in how it approaches the Lands Between. In Elden Ring, the open-world exploration and freedom players had to veer off the main path, uncover hidden caves, and simply appreciate the vastness was its defining feature. However, in Nightreign, there’s little opportunity for such exploration due to the rapid pace at which everything unfolds. Granted, this is likely by design for the game, but it diminishes what once made Elden Ring‘s design so captivating into mere ground to rush through.

The game Elden Ring is renowned for boasting one of the finest open worlds in video game history, with some players even suggesting it surpasses The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its upcoming sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. The Lands Between in Elden Ring offers a thrilling exploration experience, thanks to the myriad secrets hidden within, making each journey an exciting endeavor that is usually worth your while. The expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, too, acknowledges this, managing to elevate everything the original game offered to new altitudes.
In Elden Ring Nightreign, FromSoftware has largely abandoned the exploration and decision-making aspects of their previous games. Instead, the game seems focused on ingraining its gameplay mechanics into players so they can move through the game without much thought about where to go or what to do next. This design choice makes Elden Ring Nightreign a swift-moving Soulslike experience, with characters even capable of sprinting at unusually high speeds. Unfortunately, this speed and urgency often overshadow the charm of the Lands Between, leaving players little time to truly appreciate the world they’re in.
Autonomy Takes a Backseat to Optimization in Nightreign
A Soulslike game typically allows players significant freedom in how they approach play, allowing them to customize their characters, deviate from established paths whenever desired, and engage with challenging boss battles before they may be fully prepared. While Elden Ring Nightreign incorporates some of these features, the sense of exploration and discovery found in the original Elden Ring is noticeably absent. Instead, Elden Ring Nightreign seems to focus more on boss fights and has players rapidly moving through items, gear, leveling up when possible, and constantly searching for better equipment rather than encouraging exploration to uncover secrets.
In the Lands Between, the enchantment is overshadowed by the mounting tension as the encircling boundary tightens. This stress robs gamers of the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in their surroundings, instead instilling a sense of haste that barely allows for exploration and appreciation of the world.
As a dedicated fan, it’s clear that the design philosophy behind Elden Ring: Nightreign aligns with its intended goals, yet it unfortunately strips away the elements that made Elden Ring exceptional initially. Essentially, this transformation turns Nightreign into a mere rehash, giving it the same name as Elden Ring but failing to capture the essence that defined the original game, its substance. It’s disheartening to see the magic of Elden Ring’s Lands Between being replaced by Nightreign’s experimental mechanics, but there’s still potential for this ambitious spin-off to grow and improve in the future.
