When Elden Ring Nightreign is released this week, FromSoftware invites players on an exploratory adventure through Limveld. It’s a cooperative PvE experience that infuses the world of Elden Ring with Roguelike elements, deviating from the standard Soulslike gameplay.
Since the game’s main focus appears to be on Player versus Environment (PvE), the topic of Player versus Player (PvP) inevitably arises. In Elden Ring, there was indeed PvP, as players could engage in combat with other players who invaded their world or in arenas, but it appears that this aspect won’t be included in the upcoming game, which is disappointing to many fans.
PvP was never considered for Elden Ring Nightreign, according to the game’s director
During an interview with IGN, the game director for Elden Ring Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, shared that multiplayer versus player (PvP) was not part of their original plans due to its challenging development process. Instead, they chose to focus on a single-player experience (PvE).
Initially, Player vs Player (PVP) wasn’t a feature we actively pursued for Nightreign. Instead, we aimed to create a game centered around cooperative multiplayer and found that as we developed the unique actions and abilities for each character, balancing them for PVP was extremely challenging and detracted from the concepts and scope we had envisioned for these characters. Therefore, our main focus has been on Player vs Environment (PVE) and cooperative gameplay, so no, PVP wasn’t included in Nightreign.
It appears that the original concept of the game doesn’t align with Player versus Player (PvP) mechanics, implying it may not be included in Elden Ring Nightreign. Whether or not the game would have benefited from PvP is debatable, but we support the developers sticking to their vision and creating games based on it, which seems to be the most advantageous course of action.
Elden Ring‘s Player versus Player (PvP) experience differed from the norm, as it resembled more invasions and duels instead of having a standalone mode. Players could intrude into various servers populated by others with diverse character builds. Invasions took place during co-operative sessions anywhere in the world, while duels involved one-on-one challenges between players who wanted to engage another invader in combat.
In essence, the Player versus Player (PvP) experience in Elden Ring Nightreign might have followed a similar pattern, with the main distinction being the number of players participating in PvP on a single server. This game would have arguably been even more disorderly than it currently is, but it would have been enjoyable nonetheless.
On a brighter note, Elden Ring Nightreign will get duo-support in the future

In an interview with IGN, Junya Ishizaki admitted that duo-support is not available in “Elden Ring Nightreign” at the moment because it was unintentionally missed during development. He expressed his regret for this oversight. It’s commendable to see such openness about the game’s aspects, a trait that would certainly earn Hidetaka Miyazaki’s approval.
Apologies for any inconvenience, but during development, this feature was initially overlooked as a two-player option. Originally, our aim was to create a multiplayer cooperative game designed for three players, with that concept being the heart of Nightreign.
Ishizaki elaborated that they plan to incorporate dual-support feature in the game following its launch, offering reassurance to players worried about the post-release support for the game titled “Nightreign“.
Absolutely, I, as a player, share your sentiment about having times to simply play on my own. We took this desire into account right from the start and put in considerable effort to design an experience that caters to solo players, given the constraints of the rules and new systems. However, while focusing on that aspect, we might have unintentionally neglected the duos mode. But rest assured, we are taking note of this and it’s something we plan to address in our post-launch support.
Fans were puzzled when they learned the game would offer single-player and three-person team-up modes but not a two-person team mode, considering that both solo and triple teams are included. It seems reasonable to expect a duo option given this setup.
Fortunately, it seems that Elden Ring Nightreign will be here before long. It’s more a question of when than if. Until then, you can choose to play alone or team up with three others to conquer the bosses tormenting Limveld and triumph in your Nightfarer expeditions.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches May 30 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
