Elisabeth Moss Reveals SHOCKING Truth About Handmaid’s Tale!

In Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale, June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) is on a quest to reunite with her daughter, who was taken from her at the inception of Gilead, the oppressive society that denies women their fundamental rights. Over five gripping seasons, June has tirelessly worked towards reclaiming her child, and when the sixth and final season premieres on April 8, she will lead a full-scale uprising as her last desperate effort.

Elisabeth Moss, both starring, executive producing, and directing in the series, discussed with The Hollywood Reporter the profound influence of becoming a mother herself prior to portraying June one final time for The Handmaid’s Tale. “It was incredibly significant for me to conclude this show as a parent,” she shared. “Because I’m embodying a character who is such an iconic maternal figure. All mothers are heroines, and she certainly is one.

2024 saw actress Moss confirm her pregnancy in January, and for the first time, she openly discussed embracing motherhood during a PaleyFest LA event on Wednesday while promoting the show’s final season. While filming last year in Vancouver, she mentioned that her baby was with her on set, expressing gratitude for this opportunity, stating, “I feel so fortunate to have been able to do this, as many parents can’t. Any of us who had the chance to bring our children or see them at work would always be thankful and say, ‘Aren’t we lucky to get to do that?’

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Moss, who has not disclosed the gender or name of her child, revealed that the immense responsibility of motherhood became apparent to her as the storyline for the sixth and final season unfolded.

She emphasizes that it’s a crucial element in the narrative. What she felt was a harmonious blend, perhaps that’s the term – the merging of art and reality that was profoundly significant. She’s grateful for having spent her last season portraying June, allowing her to feel more deeply about some of June’s emotions and struggles. She’s pleased she had this emotional journey during her time on set.

Otis Fagbenle, who portrays June’s husband Luke and Hannah’s father, shared his heartfelt reunion with fellow cast member Moss upon their return to set following a hiatus of over two years. “The most significant event on the first day back was getting to meet Lizzie as a mother,” he recounted to THR. “This series is all about people and their children, and the essence of motherhood. Lizzie had this incredible journey, and I was overjoyed for her. On that first day, what stood out most to me was reconnecting with my friend, my colleague, and recognizing her new role as a mother.

In Season Six, June’s mission continues to be reuniting with and protecting her daughter Hannah (portrayed by Jordana Blake), who is being groomed to become a wife in Gilead. Elizabeth Moss hints at the intensity of June’s determination, stating that “June’s vengeance won’t cease until Hannah is secure.

In June’s latest encounter with Hannah occurred during season four, marked by an emotional reunion where their daughter, renamed Agnes by her foster parents in Gilead, initially failed to recognize June. Season five showcased Serena Joy Waterford (played by Yvonne Strahovski) manipulating Hannah as a pawn, and more recently, at the end of season five, June and Luke almost managed to rescue Hannah. This brief storyline suggested to viewers that Hannah (depicted above), who began wearing the new purple color of a Gilead wife-in-training, has never lost hope regarding her mother. She was depicted writing her real name, an act forbidden for women in Gilead, and giving a determined look similar to June’s defiant stare towards the camera.

Since then, June has welcomed another child into her family, a girl named Nichole. This little one is currently with June, existing beyond the boundaries of Gilead. It’s worth noting that Nick, a commander in Gilead and June’s romantic partner, is Nichole’s biological father. (Max Minghella portrays this character.)

The television series The Handmaid’s Tale begins its final season on April 8, airing one episode each week until the finale on May 27. As the final chapter of The Handmaid’s Tale concludes, it will pave the way for an upcoming Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Testaments, which is currently being developed by the creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, Bruce Miller. In this new series, Chase Infiniti is set to star, with Ann Dowd anticipated to reprise her role as Aunt Lydia.
