Initially, it seemed Eliza Taylor might not portray Clarke Griffin in the TV series “The 100” on the CW Network, but her performance as Clarke has become so iconic that it’s hard to envision her playing any other role. Eliza breathed life into Clarke and set a significant precedent for authentic bisexual representation on television. It feels like she was born to play Clarke; we fans couldn’t ask for anyone more suitable.
Regarding that other role, it was for a well-known character from an era before the Dark Ages, which was presented on a wider television network. While it could have led to a bigger salary and fame, Eliza believed the role didn’t suit her well enough.
Yet, had she accepted it, the world of The 100 would be a completely different feel and place.
Eliza Taylor was nearly Khaleesi in Game of Thrones
In 2010, during the early stages of her acting career, Eliza was presented with a script for the role of Daenerys Targaryen (or Khaleesi) in HBO’s fantasy drama, “Game of Thrones.” She went through an audition process, but ultimately decided that the role wasn’t suitable for her. Like many actors and actresses, Eliza made a personal decision about which projects to be involved with based on what she read in the script.
In a chat with the “Big Down Under” podcast on TMZ, hosted by Charlie Cotton on March 6th, I (Eliza) shared my journey while preparing for the iconic role of Daenerys/Khaleesi and the reasons behind my decision to pass on it.
Absolutely! “Yes, I tried out for the role of Khaleesi in Game of Thrones, and I came very close to getting it. I even received a callback and made it to the final round, which included around 10 candidates. However, I wasn’t fond of the script, so I decided not to proceed any further.
Later on, Cotton inquired from Eliza if she felt a deep sense of regret, emotionally, for not desiring to be associated with the world of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the iconic role that propelled the series into prominence. Eventually, Emilia Clarke secured the part as Khaleesi, which earned her four Primetime Emmy Award nominations, recognizing her exceptional talent as a British actress.
Not really a problem for me, actually. I find it amusing instead. For instance, here I am, supposed to be the mother of dragons, but look at this! It’s like a joke, isn’t it?
In the very same podcast, Eliza shared an interesting tidbit: she didn’t try out for the role of Clarke, but the network found no suitable candidates among others. The casting director from the network happened to appreciate her audition tapes that were initially intended for other projects, and thus began a remarkable eight-year journey that has us captivated by Eliza’s portrayal of Clarke. Today, we continue to be mesmerized by her performance as Clarke, thanks to the series being available on Netflix.
