Since I haven’t received confirmation about the Dutton family tree in 1923, I’ve been pondering quite a bit as to why. This introspection has sparked a flurry of theories from me, and I’ve arrived at an assumption that this absence of verification might be linked to Michelle Randolph’s Elizabeth’s potential role in the upcoming 1944 season of Yellowstone.
To clarify things before we delve into the theory, let’s make sure we have all the facts correct. In the second season finale of 1923, Jack Dutton passed away, leaving Elizabeth a widow. It appears that she is also expecting a child. As such, when she departed from the Dutton ranch at the end of Season 2, she was a single mother-to-be. This leaves room for speculation about how Elizabeth and her unborn child fit into the Dutton family lineage and the ongoing enigma concerning the parentage of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in the grand scheme of things.
I Think Elizabeth Could Name Her Kid John And Return To The Yellowstone With Him
Initially, I believed that Alex naming her baby John during her final moments meant she and Spencer were the grandparents of John Dutton from “Yellowstone”. However, three out of four cast members from the series “1923” seem to be suggesting that this assumption might not hold true.
Michelle Randolph asserted to me with certainty that this delivery wouldn’t provide any confirmation. In her conversation with TopMob, she stated this point confidently.
Is the door still ajar unconfirmed? Since I’m unsure, it seems neither option can be definitively ruled out at this point. It appears that everyone has their own speculation, but what I can assure you is that it hasn’t been conclusively verified yet.
This statement led me to think two things:
- Elizabeth could also name her baby John, after Jack’s dad.
- Elizabeth could return to the Yellowstone with her kid in 1944.
It might seem a bit unusual that two newborns from the same family, roughly the same age, share the name John. However, given their strong familial ties – Spencer being John’s brother and Elizabeth having a connection as John’s father-in-law – it’s understandable why they would choose to honor him with his name.
It’s possible that Elizabeth didn’t give birth in Montana (that we’re aware of), since she left before the opportunity arose. Given this circumstance, it’s understandable that she might not have envisioned returning, which could explain why she named her son John. Since the chances of her child interacting with Spencer and Alex’s child were slim, such a choice seems plausible.
Given that this door concerning family heritage remains unclosed, it seems plausible that Elizabeth might bring her child back to the ranch, potentially introducing a second John into the picture. It’s possible that she is deeply invested in them understanding their paternal origins. Perhaps she wishes for them to feel connected to the Dutton family. Maybe she envisions them asserting their claim to the ranch, defending their rightful place within it.
In another scenario, all those events might not occur. Yet, I believe there’s a chance that Randolph’s character may reappear in the year 1944, accompanied by a child named John. This could potentially have significant implications for the storyline of Yellowstone.

What If Elizabeth Is Spencer’s Widow Mentioned At The End Of 1923’s Season 2 Finale?
As a film enthusiast, I find myself pondering the intriguing twist: Elizabeth and John may revisit the ranch. Yet, I sense there’s more to it than meets the eye. After bidding farewell to Alex in 1923 (a series you can access with a Paramount+ subscription), Elsa’s voiceover provides us an insight into how Spencer spent the rest of his days post-Alex’s demise, hinting at a narrative that might become increasingly intricate.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: She pointed out that he remained single following his initial marriage, yet he welcomed a new addition to his family through a bond with another widowed companion.
After losing his first spouse, Spencer chose not to get married again. Instead, he found companionship with another woman and fathered a child together, but they did not formalize their relationship by tying the knot. Eventually, this companion of his disappeared from his life.
Now, again, Elizabeth having a baby with Spencer feels unlikely.
Indeed, consider this for a moment. Elizabeth might be the only individual who can truly empathize with Spencer’s experiences, as they both suffered immense loss at the climax of Season 2. It’s plausible that they chose to be together not due to love, but rather for solace and practicality. They might decide to raise their children jointly, yet their relationship may not last in the end.
This action could potentially establish another Dutton as a future inheritor of the property, lending intrigue to the family lineage’s development. This factor, in turn, paves the way for the most captivating aspect of my hypothesis concerning Elizabeth.

If Elizabeth Returns, And One Or Both Of These Things Happen, I Could See A Dutton Civil War Happening
In my view, it would make for a compelling story if the upcoming series, 1944, were to explore a family feud rather than having the Duttons facing an external enemy. While I acknowledge that Jamie introduced a civil war-like conflict in Yellowstone, there was always an outside force working tirelessly against the family as well. In this new show, I believe it would be fascinating to see the Duttons going head-to-head, and I think Elizabeth is crucial to setting up such a scenario.
It seems quite plausible that she might return with her adult son, given it was 1944 when he was born. They’re expected to claim the land that Jack sacrificed his life for. If her son’s name is indeed John, I foresee a potential conflict arising as one of them will eventually inherit the property and pass it down to Kevin Costner’s character, also named John.
It’s intriguing to consider the situation where three children are involved, each with a potential stake in the land. I wonder how they might decide who ultimately gets it. If my hypothesis about the widow being Elizabeth is accurate, this could lead to further conflict since she won’t be around forever. This adds another layer of complexity to the storyline.
Additionally, during the Season 2 finale, just prior to Spencer killing Whitfield, Jacob made a remark that suggested the Dutton family wouldn’t have tourism or external business concerns for at least one generation. His statement was: “This ranch is ours now, and it will be for generations to come.
I intend to create an instance of you so formidable, no one from your kind would dare venture into this valley for the next fifty years.
As a dedicated cinephile, I find myself pondering – if this is indeed the case, who could these characters potentially encounter as an adversary? A suspect from within their own ranks appears to be a compelling possibility.
In summary, I believe introducing Elizabeth’s return and potentially her children challenging Spencer and Alex’s son for land ownership would make an engaging TV show concept. This development could also serve as a compelling follow-up to the 1923 series, linking that generation of Duttons with the cast of Yellowstone.
