Ellen Pompeo Revealed The Grey’s Anatomy Scene That Made Her Daughter Stop Watching The Show, And It Makes Complete Sense

The medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” is reaching its 20th anniversary as Season 21 unfolds on the 2025 TV lineup, and during this time Ellen Pompeo has convincingly played Meredith Grey and given birth to three children in real life. Unlike many child celebrities who aren’t interested in their parents’ work, 15-year-old Stella used to watch “Grey’s Anatomy”. However, Pompeo disclosed that one particularly intense scene caused her to stop watching the show altogether.

As a dedicated fan, I can confidently say that with all 20 seasons available for streaming, “Grey’s Anatomy” stands among the most engaging TV series ever and is simply perfect for binge-watching on Netflix. My daughter, who has a Netflix subscription, found herself revisiting the formative years of Meredith Grey. However, during Season 5, she stumbled upon an episode that ended her viewing streak, as I later learned from Ellen Pompeo’s appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show.” On the show, Pompeo shared with the host that this particular episode was the reason behind my daughter’s decision to pause her binge-watching journey.

In simpler terms,

I spent some time watching a few seasons with her, and I believe she shared the same feeling many people get when they see James Bond. Just like when George O’Malley died, it was too much for them to handle. So, I suspect she went as far as that point.

As a movie critic who vividly remembers the impact of Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 5 episode “Now or Never”, I can confidently say it left an indelible mark on me even after all these years. I was well past my teenage years when this emotional rollercoaster first premiered, and I’m still not convinced that I’ve fully recuperated from its poignant storyline.

In a heart-stopping event during the series, a man arrives at the hospital after being run over and dragged by a bus. His condition is so severe that he’s unrecognizable and can’t talk. Yet, in a desperate attempt to communicate, he writes “007” – George O’Malley’s nickname – on Meredith’s palm. This action leaves Meredith stunned, eliciting a gasp and exclamation of “Oh God!”, followed by her rushing through the halls shouting, “It’s George!

Ellen Pompeo told People that Stella did the same thing, saying:

007, or Agent 007, was the term that left me in awe. My little one shared an identical response. Her eyes welled up with tears at the sight of it. Caught on camera, I struggled to maintain my composure too.

Truly emotional, I’ve shed numerous tears about this. It’s understandable if someone decides to halt their Grey’s Anatomy viewing journey after that episode. However, Stella may have encountered other challenging instances prior to that one. Ellen Pompeo mentioned that Stella was less than impressed with Meredith pleading for a man’s affection in the well-known “Pick me, choose me, love me” scene.

Additionally, Meredith and George’s embarrassing sexual encounter was another hurdle, and I’m guessing Ellen Pompeo fielded some inquiries about the underwear-on-the-noticeboard predicament. Furthermore, it’s not hard to imagine that Stella may have winced just as much as we did during Izzie and Denny’s spectral love scene, even though it didn’t directly involve her own mother.

If you, like me, were taken aback by the unexpected James Bond-like twist in Grey’s Anatomy, fear not! The show is always ready to welcome you back whenever you’re ready. Not only can you stream it on Netflix, but a Hulu subscription also gives you access to every season, including the latest Season 21. In fact, episodes are available the very next day after they air at 10 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC.
