Elliot Page Talks Viktor's Journey in The Umbrella Academy Season 4

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed countless stories of superheroes and their complex journeys, I can confidently say that Viktor Hargreeves’ tale of self-discovery and acceptance in The Umbrella Academy is one for the books. Growing up with powers hidden from you by your own father, dealing with sibling rivalry, and saving the world multiple times – that’s a tough act to follow!

Elliot Page discussed the personal growth and self-acceptance arc of his character, Viktor Hargreeves, after the emotionally intense finale of ‘The Umbrella Academy’. In a recent chat with Collider, he shared insights on this topic.

In this period, he encounters chances to voice specific aspects to particular individuals, which seems crucial for him. I believe these instances carry immense power and contribute significantly to his self-acknowledgment.

As an introverted film enthusiast, I can relate to the complex upbringing of Viktor, a character who shared his life with superpowered siblings. Life was far from simple for him, especially since he was raised by my fictional counterpart, Reginal Hargreeves, portrayed by Colm Feore. However, destiny had other plans, and it wasn’t until I uncovered hidden talents that had been kept secret from me by my father that I truly found my identity.

In the year 2007, musician Gerard Way unveiled “The Umbrella Academy.” This comic book series chronicles the escapades of a troubled group of adopted siblings endowed with extraordinary abilities, as they confront an array of eccentric supervillains (and occasionally engage in squabbles among themselves). Much like Garth Ennis’ “The Boys,” it offers a raw portrayal of the darker aspects associated with being a superhero.

The well-known Netflix show centers around these same characters, now struggling adults, who are thrust back into the task of preventing global catastrophe. Initially, Viktor is portrayed as the unwitting antagonist instigating the Umbrella Academy’s initial conflict to avert worldwide doom. By the end, he joins forces with his siblings for their most significant fight yet.

Viktor’s Necessary Confrontation Shows Self-Acceptance

Regarding conflicts, Viktor finds himself tackling his most significant battle as he encounters Reginald Hargreeves for the first time on the subject of his questionable upbringing methods. According to Page, this encounter is vividly portrayed.

For an actor, moments like that are enjoyable because they’re filled with depth. This intense confrontation between Victor and his father, where he unleashes years of pent-up feelings, holds significant weight for him. It marks a turning point in him, signifying a step towards moving on and releasing much of the anger he harbors. I believe this scene is crucial to his character development and progression.

The page additionally discussed the unique chance that particular scene offered, considering it provided an opportunity for collaboration with Feore individually, as well as for developing Viktor’s character.

“It was delightful to experience those moments side by side. What mattered most to Viktor, in my opinion, was discovering self-acceptance, something he hadn’t managed until then. However, this contrasts with how his father perceives him.”

Regarding the Umbrella Academy, Reginald has consistently caused trouble since they were kids. However, his treatment of Viktor was particularly abhorrent. He manipulated Viktor into believing he had no special abilities, made him feel worthless, and incited the other siblings to dismiss and disrespect Viktor similarly.

Page’s excitement over the long overdue confrontation is visible in Viktor’s heated exchange with Reginald. Finally, someone takes the old man to task for being a bad parent! It’s a powerful moment among many in the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy.
