If you started watching “The Good Wife” universe by first binge-watching “Elsbeth,” you probably view Carrie Preston’s character as honest and virtuous. But as I’m now watching the show she originally appeared on with my Paramount+ subscription, along with the current hit series airing on CBS, it has become clear that although her sweet qualities are true, this lawyer is not hesitant to employ underhanded tactics when necessary. With the second season of “Elsbeth” set to air in 2025, it appears that her past and present may intersect in a way that connects the two shows in an intriguing manner.
Currently, Carrie Preston portrays Elsbeth in both “The Good Wife” and “Elsbeth”. Despite this, the roles she plays in each series are distinctly different, which means you can enjoy “Elsbeth” without having seen “The Good Wife” prior. However, following Season 2, Episode 10 of the spinoff, there seems to be a connection between the two shows as the character, who is now a lawyer-turned-crime solver, might return to the courtroom.
Essentially, Elsbeth’s past is creating trouble for her during this season. One of her prominent clients from her days in Chicago is causing issues and generating news headlines. In Episode 10, Preston’s character expresses her frustration because she can’t defend herself publicly due to attorney-client privilege, as it becomes clear that the responsibility for suppressing a police report linked to this case is being attributed to her.
Nonetheless, it’s clear that Elsbeth won’t just stand idly by. Thus, by the conclusion of the episode, she manages to find a way around attorney-client privilege. In the last moments of the show, she moves towards Van Ness and tells him: “I’ve found a loophole.
Dear Mr. Van Ness,
I’m writing to express my dismay over the recent press release from your law firm that has tarnished my reputation by implicating me in your legal troubles. The fallout from this allegation may result in me losing my job, a prospect I find deeply concerning. Yet, despite these challenges, I stand before you with nothing left to lose. However, rest assured, your confidentiality is of utmost importance to me and your secrets will remain safe with me.
Interestingly, I’ve received an appeal for assistance from TruRose, who seems to be preparing for her separation from you. Although I was not expecting this turn of events, I find myself in a unique position to potentially lend support during this difficult time.
In response, Van Ness threatens Elsbeth, stating that if she speaks about the report, he will make her life miserable. He implies he has connections within the police force who could forcibly enter her home. Additionally, he hints at flooding her emails with online harassment.
In the context of our recent exchange, that incident ended up with me apprehending him, as I perceived his comments as minor infractions. However, when this fellow asserted he was merely conversing with Preston’s on-screen persona, I countered with a firm response:
“I understand you were having a conversation with Preston’s character, but your words crossed the line, and that’s why I had to take action.
Indeed, your actions appeared intimidating with a third party present, which potentially breaches the confidentiality of our attorney-client relationship. However, I’d like to emphasize that this situation doesn’t hinder my ability to stand up for myself. And let me assure you, I am particularly skilled and committed in defending when necessary.
I wasn’t joking, I genuinely cheered for Elsbeth when she made that statement. It was the finest move she’s made this season, skillfully maneuvering through the complexities of law and its intricacies. Additionally, it offered a sneak peek into her future strategies as she faces off against Van Ness.

It seems likely that this ongoing dispute will eventually escalate into a major court case, with Elsbeth returning to her role as a defense attorney. To date, she has not held this position in the series “Elsbeth,” although we did catch a glimpse of her courtroom skills during the jury duty episode earlier in the season. I’m eagerly anticipating more scenes showcasing her legal abilities and her exceptional performance beyond crime-solving and winning.
She’s quite formidable as a lawyer on “The Good Wife,” if I might say so. Despite being a generally kind individual, much like other characters in that series, she is relentless in ensuring her client emerges victorious, which sometimes takes her into questionable ethical grounds that she doesn’t shy away from. I can’t wait to witness her brilliant courtroom strategies that we saw her use in defending Peter, Alicia, Will, and others. I’m eager to see her innovative legal methods again. And boy, I’m excited to see her back in the courtroom!
I’m crossing my fingers that in Season 2 (which airs on CBS every Thursday at 10 p.m.) we will have Elsbeth return as a lawyer, not just because it would be thrilling, but also because it would provide an excellent connection to The Good Wife, the outstanding series that brought us the character of Elsbeth in the first place.
