As a fan of captivating storytelling that showcases diverse talent, I am thrilled to witness Karla Sofía Gascón taking on her first major role post-Emilia Pérez in the Spanish-language adaptation of Camila Sosa Villada’s dark fairy tale novel, Bad Girls. The project promises a gripping narrative, with Armando Bó, an Academy Award winner, at the helm as director and co-writer.
Previously known for her role in the acclaimed film “Emilia Pérez” at Cannes, Karla Sofía Gascón is now set to take on the leading role in “Las Malas,” a Spanish-language rendition of Camila Sosa Villada’s ominous fairy tale novel, “Bad Girls.
Armando Bo, the Academy Award winner for collaborating on Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s 2014 film “Birdman”, will take charge of the upcoming feature film and is working together with Josefina Licitra to write the script.
This project originates from About Entertainment, a company located in both Argentina and Uruguay; Infinity Hill, recognized for their Oscar-nominated movie “Argentina 1985”; and Suma Content, an internationally recognized, independent Spanish production company. (Paraphrased)
In a new role, Gascón takes on the character of Aunt Encarna, a stern yet nurturing figure who heads a collective of transgender sex workers. However, her usual routine is disrupted when she discovers an abandoned infant and chooses to adopt him unknowingly placing everyone around her in potential peril.
In 2019, Villada, a renowned Argentinian actress who is also trans, released her first novel titled “Girls.” This captivating work beautifully combines elements of magic with the raw realities of urban life. The novel was not only critically acclaimed but also won numerous awards, such as the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the Grand Prix de L’Héroïne from French magazine Madame Figaro, and the Spanish Narrative Prize presented by Barcelona bookstore Finestres.
This project is being worked on by Bo, Natacha Cervi, et al.)
Exec producing are Villada, Phin Glynn and Delfina Montecchia.
I made my debut in the daring crime musical “Emilia Pérez,” brilliantly directed by Jacques Audiard and acquired by Netflix from Cannes. I was privileged to receive the Best Actress accolade at Cannes, marking an unprecedented achievement as a transgender woman, making history as the first to win this prestigious award.
The actress accumulated numerous accolades, such as being nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, winning a European Film Award for Best European Actress, and receiving the Savannah Film Festival’s Distinguished Performance award. Additionally, Emilia Pérez is the second most-nominated film in Golden Globes history and was chosen to represent France in the category of best international feature at the Oscars. The movie also features Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and Adriana Paz.
Bó co-wrote Biutiful, Iñárritu’s drama that starred Javier Bardem, and is the showrunner, director and executive producer of the two-season Amazon Prime Video series El Presidente and executive producer of the limited series Cromañon. He made his feature directorial debut with El Último Elvis, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012, and also helmed Animal in 2018.
Gascón is repped by UTA and GET Agency. Bo is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Johnson Shapiro.
