As someone who has traveled extensively and immersed myself in diverse cultures, I must say that Emily in Paris is a disappointing portrayal of an American abroad. While I understand the appeal of the show, its blatant disregard for French culture and language, not to mention the protagonist’s arrogance, leaves much to be desired.

Prepare your popcorn and steady your nerves, for the renowned American residing in Paris is set to make her reappearance soon! This time, she’ll be strolling through the romantic streets of Paris and embarking on an exciting journey to Italy. You’ve got it right – Season 4 of Emily in Paris is just about to premiere, but a slight sense of irritation is starting to creep in as well. This isn’t solely due to Netflix adopting a rather clingy two-part release system, but also because it seems that our dear Emily Cooper hasn’t undergone any significant changes yet.

As a seasoned movie critic, let me share my thoughts on the captivating series, “Emily in Paris.” This show takes us along on the unanticipated and undeniably thrilling voyage of Emily, an American college grad, who finds herself immersed in the City of Lights, pursuing a job at a Parisian marketing firm. Leveraging her digital influence and communication skills, she aims to infuse an American perspective into this French company. Now, is this potentially fraught with complications? Absolutely!

Hate-Love for Emily in Paris

It’s no surprise that Netflix often cancels beloved shows while extending less impressive ones for multiple seasons. For instance, there have been whispers about a fifth season of Emily in Paris, which has sparked quite a controversy since its debut in October 2020. Some find the main character’s entitled and boastful attitude to be an integral part of Emily in Paris, but it seems we may not escape this behavior anytime soon. The upcoming fourth season continues this lack of etiquette, as Emily dives headfirst into more lectures and exhausting love triangle discussions. Despite the widespread dislike for Emily in Paris, it could still become a secret indulgence.

The affection for the show Emily in Paris stems from its light-hearted, easy-to-follow nature that demands minimal focus. The characters tend to be one-dimensional and the narrative often follows predictable patterns, yet when viewed through the lens of magical realism, it seems to fit surprisingly well. Emily’s life is portrayed as carefree, mirroring a dreamlike existence. While the show leans more towards fiction than reality, setting aside its problematic aspects for a moment, it can provide an enjoyable escape from everyday life.

Despite the intrigue of sending Emily to Paris with the mission to transform French PR, it’s Emily herself who presents the major issue. She exudes naivety and sips from a cup of privilege, acting as if she’s been sent from on high with a magical solution for modernization. She embodies a stereotype, fitting neatly into the “chosen one” archetype. I apologize for any disillusionment, but unlike Harry Potter, who was chosen to save the world, Emily heads off in an entirely different direction. She manages to preserve images on her phone quite well, but everywhere else she creates chaos instead.

Essentially, the story begins by presenting Emily, an American woman, tasked with modernizing a French company by incorporating American methods. While this setup suggests U.S. dominance, it potentially overshadows the rich culture of France and other nations.

Emily excels at irritating her French colleagues by ridiculing their language and culture, yet she escapes any repercussions. Beyond boasting about her flawless French environment, her actions primarily serve to erode the French identity of Savoir’s staff. Given this context, there are concerns about Emily in Paris moving to Rome. Although it may not be deliberate, Emily has an uncanny ability to annoy people almost instantly.

Maintaining her role as the “preferred one,” she distinguishes herself by focusing on captivating aspects of French culture, while overlooking other parts. There’s only one arbiter of what’s contemporary and what isn’t, and that arbiter often makes bold fashion statements in the city. Although Season 4 may not show Emily in a positive light, it could provide an opportunity for her wardrobe to improve.

Over the last three seasons, it’s clear that Emily in Paris’ true standout character isn’t Emily herself, but her friend Mindy. Unlike Emily, who arrived in Paris with a life of privilege, Mindy chose to go to Paris on her own and strive for success. She didn’t arrive in Paris as a symbol of ignorance and arrogance, instead making an effort to familiarize herself with the city, appreciate its people, and learn about their culture and language.

In addition to her qualities, Mindy stands out as a true friend who frequently comes to Emily’s aid when needed. She offers support and encouragement consistently. However, their friendship can be intriguing to observe due to their contrasting personalities – while Emily tends to focus predominantly on herself and seldom inquires about Mindy’s life, Mindy often serves as a counterbalance for Emily’s overblown issues. One of the most anticipated aspects of Emily in Paris Season 4 is giving Mindy the recognition she deserves.

Anticipating the fourth season of Emily in Paris on Netflix (August 15), I eagerly hope Mindy’s character will be given a broader stage, allowing for a richer exploration of her depth. As for Emily, it remains intriguing to predict how the “chosen one” trope will develop further; however, it’s clear that Season 4 will undoubtedly present its share of complex situations.
