Eminem Calls Back to Platinum-Blond Slim Shady Era With “Houdini” VMAs Performance

As a long-time fan of Eminem, I must say that his performance at this year’s VMAs was nothing short of spectacular! The return of Slim Shady, accompanied by a horde of look-alikes, took me back to his iconic 2000 VMAs performance. It was like reliving history right there in the UBS Arena!

As a gamer, I’d say: “Even though Eminem’s new album title is ‘The Death of Slim Shady’, when he hit the stage for his TV debut from that album, he resurrected the platinum-haired version of himself, accompanied by a pack of doppelgängers.

At the start of the 2024 VMAs, Eminem’s performance of “Houdini” mirrored his 2000 VMAs rendition of “Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” where he was joined by numerous doppelgängers. This time, Eminem appeared at Long Island’s UBS Arena with a platinum-blond wig, accompanied by several men who sported the same hairstyle.

Prior to entering the arena, an “E” symbol, similar to the Bat-Signal, illuminated the New York City skyline ahead of the 2024 MTV VMAs. As Eminem and his lookalikes made their way onto the stage, he deftly navigated among them, carrying on with his performance.

Later, he switched to singing “Somebody Save Me,” trading his wig for a black hat, giving off a more contemporary vibe. The song includes Jelly Roll, but his performance was represented through onstage videos since Jelly Roll is touring and couldn’t make it to the New York awards ceremony. He’s due to perform in San Antonio, Texas, tonight.

The performance ended with Eminem sitting in a chair, looking reflective.

2024 saw Eminem entering the MTV VMAs with eight nominations across various categories such as Video of the Year, Best Hip-Hop, Song of the Summer, and Iconic Performance. The last one was for his 2000 medley performance, which was nominated for the most iconic performance. He bagged two awards that night, winning both Best Hip-Hop and Best Visual Effects.

After securing two more victories, Eminem surpassed Peter Gabriel to claim the title of solo male artist with the most Video Music Awards (VMA) wins in the show’s entire history. Furthermore, he is now the rap artist with the most VMA awards, having earned a total of 15, and ranks second among all artists in terms of nominations, boasting an impressive 67 nods – just behind Madonna who has garnered 71.

In the 2024 VMA nominations, Taylor Swift takes the top spot with twelve recognitions, closely trailed by Post Malone with eleven, Eminem with eight, while Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, SZA, and Sabrina Carpenter each receive seven.
