Emmys: John Oliver Thanks His Dog As ‘Last Week Tonight’ Repeats as Best Scripted Variety Series

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for quality entertainment, I must say that Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has consistently been a standout in the realm of television comedy. The show’s ability to tackle complex and often overlooked topics with humor and intelligence is truly commendable.

I was thrilled to learn that “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” bagged the honor for the best scripted variety series at the 76th Emmy Awards last Sunday! What a fantastic achievement!

Last Week Tonight secured its second consecutive victory in the ‘Best Scripted Variety Series‘ category, making it equal to the total number of awards presented so far in this category. This show beat out Saturday Night Live, which was the sole competitor nominated in this category.

Last Sunday marked the ninth consecutive victory for the show in its series category, as ‘Last Week Tonight’ had previously claimed seven straight Emmy Awards for the best variety talk series prior to shifting to scripted variety.

As a passionate viewer, I’m excited about the new Emmy category for the 75th awards. This category has been introduced to distinguish between talk shows, which are primarily unscripted interviews or panel discussions, and shows that focus more on scripted or performed entertainment. In other words, it aims to separate programs where a substantial part of the runtime involves chats with celebrities or personalities, from those whose primary purpose is to entertain us through scripted performances. This change promises a fairer representation of the diverse range of content we enjoy!

As I stood there holding my Emmy, I couldn’t help but express my gratitude to HBO for standing by our show for over a decade. It wasn’t certain that we’d make it this far, so here’s to continuing the journey!

Apart from thanking his children, he inadvertently addressed his son Hudson as “Husband” initially, remarking that this slip-up might cause trouble later. Towards the end of his speech, he also acknowledged their family pet. As the orchestra started to play a somewhat melancholic tune to signal the end of his speech, he pointed out that the music was fitting because they were bidding farewell to their beloved dog, as they had to say goodbye to her.

Oliver remarked, ‘I’m feeling quite like Sarah McLachlan today.’ She was a wonderful canine, not only for herself but for every dog. Each of you are exceptional, be it girl or boy, and you all deserve a reward!
