As a gamer with a keen eye for pop culture and a heart for the entertainment industry, I must say that this year’s Emmy In Memoriam segment left me a bit puzzled. While it was touching to see the tribute to some of our beloved stars, the omission of certain names, particularly those who had significant contributions to television, seemed odd.
During the “In Memory” part of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, many small-screen celebrities who passed away over the past year were honored, yet some people on social media noticed that several well-known figures missing from the tribute.
In this emotional part of the show, rapper Jelly Roll delivered a brief speech before playing his song “I Am Not Okay,” which was released in 2024. As the Peacock Theater displayed a series of images and the TV screen echoed them, tributes to several deceased stars were shown, such as Donald Sutherland, James Earl Jones, Martin Mull, Richard Lewis, Richard Simmons, Shannen Doherty, Gena Rowlands, Chance Perdomo, and Carl Weathers.
There were some areas online where there was confusion due to the oversight of mentioning Matthew Perry, a cast member from the popular show Friends, who unfortunately passed away on October 28, 2023 at the age of 54. The reason for his absence was clarified later as the Television Academy chose to honor the actor with a special tribute during the 74th Emmy Awards ceremony in January, which had been postponed due to two strikes in Hollywood.
Users on social media expressed disappointment that notable figures such as Shelley Duvall, Erica Ash, Johnny Wactor, Tyler Christopher, Joe Flaherty, and Chita Rivera were not recognized by the Television Academy, which they believed was a negative reflection of its choices.
Despite primarily being recognized for her work in films, Shelley Duvall – who passed away in July at the age of 75 – was also a two-time Emmy nominee. Known for her contributions to children’s television, she created, wrote, and produced “Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories” and served as creator and executive producer for “Tall Tales & Legends.” She received nominations for both of these shows.
Ash, a comedian and actress who tragically passed away in July at the age of 46, was known for her appearances on ‘MADtv’ and ‘The Big Gay Sketch Show’. Later in her career, she starred in the sitcom ‘Survivor’s Remorse’, which aired on Starz.
Actor, well-known for portraying Brando Corbin on the show “General Hospital” and Johnny in the NBC series “Siberia”, met an unfortunate end in a robbery incident in Los Angeles last May. He was just 37 years old.
Apart from another notable cast member, Tyler Christopher, was likewise absent. Christopher had portrayed the roles of Nikolas Cassadine and Connor Bishop on ABC’s General Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away in October 2023 at the age of 50, his demise being attributed to excessive alcohol consumption.
Notably absent from the Emmy awards was Joe Flaherty, a significant oversight given his close working relationship with host Eugene Levy. Unfortunately, Flaherty, who passed away at 82 in April, played an important character, Harold Weir, on NBC’s popular series Freaks and Geeks.
Rivera’s television journey lasted for seven decades. Despite her passing in January at the age of 91, she was best known for her work in theater. However, she also graced several notable TV shows such as “The Carol Burnett Show”, “The New Dick Van Dyke Show”, and “Dora The Explorer” as well as “Will & Grace”.
Several names left out of the televised tribute during the Emmy Awards, such as Ash, Duvall, Wactor, and Rivera, were featured instead within an extended In Memoriam segment on the Emmys’ official website.
