En Iwamura Lifts the ‘Mask’ on New Ross + Kramer Show

Couldn’t it be fascinating to ponder if one mask could embody centuries of diverse cultures? That’s the intriguing question at the core of En Iwamura‘s latest solo show, currently running until March 22, 2025, at Ross + Kramer Gallery in New York. Driven by recollections from his youth and global inspirations, the exhibition titled Mask presents more than 20 ceramic sculptures, featuring some of Iwamura’s initial wall-mounted sculptures, each exuding a sense of exploration and amazement.

In his most recent collection, the Japanese artist delves into the universal theme of masks throughout history and cultures, reminiscing about the captivating allure and wonder he experienced as a child during visits to museums in Osaka. As he examines the historical importance of masks, Iwamura ponders their relevance in our post-pandemic society.

This collection, varying in form, hue, and emotion, is unified by Iwamura’s distinctive approach to texture and materials. The rough textures of the handcrafted sculptures mirror those found in Zen gardens and Jomon pottery, creating a harmonious fusion of ancient tradition with modern intrigue.

Fundamentally, this exhibit serves as a call for viewers to revisit their inner child and momentarily escape the noise of grown-up existence. The display not only showcases fresh ‘Mask’ creations but also treasures from the ‘Neo Jo-mon: Stacking Neighbor’, an earlier collection inspired by Iwamura observing his son discovering the world through play.
