Entertainment Squad, an independent distribution company, has taken on the task of creating a full-length film based on the short story titled “Play It Again”. This is their initial original production under the newly acquired PrideFlix label. The LGBTQ+ romantic comedy, to be helmed by director Dan Abramovici (known for “Ben’s at Home”), will have Kate Forrest and Myrthin Stagg of Stagg Forrest Films as producers, along with executive producers David J. Phillips (“Eat Wheaties!”) and Entertainment Squad founder Shaked Berenson (“Slaxx”).
In a summary provided by the company, they describe ‘Play It Again’ as an award-winning short film that touched audiences globally. This movie tells the story of a person who often daydreams about Hollywood scenarios, and their struggle to confess their feelings for their best friend during a family gathering. The plot explores themes such as missed chances, unvoiced emotions, and the uncertainty of relationships, all presented in a unique blend of romantic comedy genres.
According to Forrest and Stagg, “Play It Again” is an emotional homage to romantic comedies, combining sharp humor, affectionate sentimentality, and a hint of nostalgia. This movie will make you laugh, possibly bring a tear to your eye, and undeniably inspire you to cheer for love in all its complex forms. The unique and surprising rom-coms have garnered a dedicated fanbase, and “Play It Again” captures this trend with a modern and self-aware take on the genre.
Phillips remarked: “This film offers a distinctly quirky charm, echoing classic Hollywood tales, and relatable characters grappling with universal relationship struggles. It boasts strong commercial potential while warmly welcoming LGBTQ+ audiences and more. The success of films like ‘Love, Simon’ and ‘Happiest Season’ demonstrates a clear demand for top-notch, contemporary, and inclusive narratives that make a mark in the marketplace.
Berenson, CEO of Entertainment Squad, emphasized that the call for diverse, inclusive narratives is more powerful than ever before. He also noted that with its fresh perspective on queer relationships and a blend of humor and emotionally resonant drama, the series “Play It Again” is well-positioned to appeal both to specialized LGBTQ+ streaming services like PrideFlix as well as broader mainstream platforms.
At this moment, the movie titled “Play It Again” is being prepared for production and is scheduled to be released in the year 2026, under the PrideFlix label. We can anticipate casting announcements to be made shortly.
Entertainment Squad’s purchase of PrideFlix earlier in the year “strengthened their dedication to enhancing LGBTQ+ programming,” as Martin Gallery was lately named Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions, according to the company’s statement.
