As a lifelong fan of Shrek and his swampy adventures, I must admit that these dark and violent reimaginings have left me feeling a bit… well, ogre-whelmed! While it’s fascinating to see how creativity can push boundaries, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of nostalgia for the original, more lighthearted tales.

The rapid (and highly controversial) rise of AI-generated content has led to some nightmarish creations, and the latest example of that involves the world’s most famous ogre, Shrek. Known to be a lovable, albeit brash ogre, for the most part, the film franchise doesn’t contain too many dark undertones. The lighthearted films feature updated adaptations of several classic childhood fairy tales with a modern spin. However, a new take on Shrek takes the character on a gritty, gruesome journey unlike anything seen before in the DreamWorks franchise.

A person who’s brimming with creativity and has some spare time decided to post a grisly series of photos on Reddit, showcasing a new, brutal interpretation of Shrek. The first snapshot presents our green hero squaring off against a ghostly, enigmatic depiction of Princess Fiona in the forest.

You can check out this reimagined version of Shrek below.

The subsequent images focus on Shrek, armed and prepared to confront a smaller group of guards, likely from Lord Farquaad’s service. The story concludes with an intense battle scene between Shrek and a dramatically realistic Dragon, reminiscent of a monster straight from the world of ‘Game of Thrones’.

Shrek Isn’t The Only Famous Family Franchise Going Dark

While the images showcasing a dark and violent version of Shrek are only renderings (for now, at least), it’s not the only franchise to get a horror-inspired makeover recently. A horrifying example of this trend can be seen in the ever-expanding horror crossover event, Poohniverse. Once Pooh and his Hundred Acre Wood friends entered the public domain, a gory and gruesome franchise was born, featuring the characters as new faces of fear.

A timeless childhood figure undergoing a terrifying transformation is Mickey Mouse. Versions of this cherished Walt Disney creation based on “Steamboat Willie” have now entered the public domain, leading to content creators giving Mickey a sinister twist. In the horror movie “Steamboat Willie,” our world-renowned mouse character goes on a violent killing spree aboard a ferry boat.

For devoted Shrek fans who may find AI representations of Shrek startling, there’s good news: soon it will be Mike Myers reprising his role that we know and love. This summer, the announcement of Shrek 5 marked the return of this cherished franchise since the release of Shrek Forever After in 2010. Though specifics about the plot for the fifth film have yet to be revealed, what we do know is that all the original cast members will be back. To remind those who might need a recap, this exciting news suggests Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots) are most likely to join Myers for the much-anticipated sequel.

Shrek 5
is slated to premiere in theaters on July 1, 2026.
