As a horror enthusiast who has seen my fair share of films, I must admit that “Deliver Us from Evil” left a lasting impression on me. The movie was more than just a collection of jump scares and terrifying visuals; it delved deep into the human psyche and explored themes of good versus evil, redemption, and the supernatural.
In 2014, Eric Bana, the remarkably gifted Australian actor, took on an unexpected part. This shift occurred when Bana was receiving immense appreciation for his role as a charming heartthrob with extensive acting skills and versatility, which he had demonstrated through notable performances in “Hulk” as Bruce Banner and Prince Hector in “Troy,” a decade prior. In this film, titled “Deliver Us from Evil,” Bana made his sole appearance in the horror genre.
The film earned acceptable revenues from theatres but received harsh criticism from critics, garnering just a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This assessment was met with skepticism by dedicated horror enthusiasts who found the movie genuinely terrifying and boasting an unsettling atmosphere. Bana’s acting in the film also warranted praise for his portrayal of a character that had more depth than initially apparent.
As a horror movie enthusiast with a deep interest in the real-life origins of fictional stories, I found this film to be particularly intriguing. At first glance, it appeared to be just another typical Hollywood horror production, filled with elements like demonic possession and characters such as a former heroin addict turned priest and a cop transformed into a demonologist.

The Plot of Deliver Us from Evil
The movie opens with a chilling sequence in which a squad of four marines in Iraq, consisting of themselves, stumble upon something horrifying in a cave. Their body cameras then suddenly go dark, adding to the suspense and giving the story an ominous start. Subsequently, the narrative shifts to New York City. In this part of the film, Tomasas Bana assumes the role of the protagonist – a brave sergeant in the NYPD’s 46th precinct, based in the South Bronx. portrayed as a no-nonsense cop, hardened by his experiences on the job, Sgt Ralph Sarchie carries with him the heavy weight of his responsibilities wherever he goes.
Due to his regular night shifts with partner Butler (Joel McHale), Sarchie frequently had to be separated from his family during those hours. His wife and daughter, portrayed by Olivia Munn and a young Lulu Wilson, respectively, were left at home. In this grisly urban environment where they worked, Sarchie and Butler confronted various crimes as they unfolded throughout the night. They dealt with harrowing situations, such as discovering deceased infants and responding to domestic violence incidents involving a former marine who brutally assaulted his wife before escaping the scene.
I was baffled when authorities apprehended the woman who allegedly threw her own toddler into the moat at the Bronx Zoo’s lion enclosure, labeling her as deranged. The events that unfolded were far from ordinary, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of unease as she was arrested and taken away for mental health evaluation.
As I followed Sarchie’s journey unfolding on screen, I found myself drawn into his harrowing experiences. I felt as if I was right there with him, encountering evil in its most raw and terrifying form. Each step he took to confront the supernatural entity was a battle within himself, forcing him to face his deepest fears and personal demons. The film’s climax left me breathless, as I witnessed an exorcism that sent chills down my spine. But just when I thought it couldn’t get any scarier, I learned that the story was based on real events experienced by Sgt Ralph Sarchie. His tales of encounters with demons and dark entities in the real world added an unsettling layer to the already terrifying narrative.
The Real Ralph Sarchie in Deliver Us from Evil
In the film, some parts of the supernatural storyline and intricacies were greatly embellished. However, the portrayal of Sgt Sarchie’s background as a law enforcement officer holds truth. Towards the end, it is revealed that Sarchie, deeply affected by his experiences, eventually embraced Christianity and devoted himself to studying demons.
In his actual life, Ralph Sarchie, currently 62, underwent a significant transformation. Having spent 18 years with the NYPD, he claimed to have encountered unusual occurrences during his tenure. Consequently, he dedicated himself to probing paranormal phenomena and aiding in genuine exorcisms. Notable accomplishments of his career include writing a book titled “Beware the Night,” where he shares his encounters with demons and other malevolent entities, as well as partnering with the authentic Ed and Lorraine Warren (portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in “The Conjuring” movies) on numerous cases.
Other Chilling Aspects of Deliver Us from Evil
Horror movie enthusiasts were thrilled with the film due to its intricate elements that sent shivers down their spines alongside the terrifying scenes. While some may argue that the scares were excessive, the subtle details added depth to the story. For instance, what appeared to be Sarchie’s police intuition was instead revealed as a spiritual gift by Mendoza, allowing him to sense evil presences.
As a cop with an uncanny ability to uncover the darkest crimes and instinctively sense the evil within perpetrators, I found myself inexorably drawn to the most unfathomable cases. In the fictional world of Sarchie, this character carried a hidden burden – he had once taken the law into his own hands by brutally avenging a pedophile’s victim. Haunted by the guilt of this secret act, I recognized that my inner demons must first be confronted before I could embark on my new calling as a demonologist.
As a gamer, I’ve come to ponder the idea that some of the most horrific actions committed by humans stem from a deep spiritual darkness within them. To me, atrocities such as murder and child molestation are not just the result of human choices, but rather an all-consuming darkness that dwells inside these individuals. I can’t be certain, but Eric Bana’s chilling portrayal in that film only served to reinforce this belief. In an interview with Collider, I shared my thoughts on the matter: “The plot was downright terrifying, and Eric Bana brought the darkness to life through his remarkable performance.”
“Evil has a connection to the Devil as its source. While the Devil is the prime instigator, he doesn’t always directly engage with people in the physical or spiritual realm. Sometimes, people inflict harm on each other independently. Over my 20-year experience, I have witnessed ample evidence of both kinds of evil.”
Deliver Us from Evil is available to rent on Prime Video.
