As a connoisseur of art, steeped in the rich tapestry of cultural narratives and traditions, I am thrilled to announce my anticipation for the upcoming exhibition at Ross + Kramer Gallery – Esther Mahlangu: Time in Color. With a life that mirrors the vibrant hues and geometric patterns of her works, Dr. Esther Mahlangu is a beacon of inspiration, blending tradition with innovation while keeping one foot firmly rooted in her community’s heritage.
Ross and Kramer Gallery will unveil the solo exhibition titled “Esther Mahlangu: Time in Color“, featuring more than 30 pieces by South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu, provided by No More Rulers. The show is slated to debut on November 21, 2024.
Dr. Mahlangu is renowned worldwide for her lively, geometric artworks steeped in the traditional Ndebele style, an artistic custom handed down from one generation of women to another over centuries. Originally painted on dwellings, these designs function as narrative devices that honor heritage and commemorate significant milestones in life.
Mahlangu’s creations reinterpret Ndebele patterns for modern viewers, combining age-old traditions with fresh ideas. This display encompasses a decade of her work (from 2011 to 2021) and showcases a hand-painted BMW Art Car, highlighting her pioneering status as the first African artist to contribute to this renowned project.
In addition to her artistic impact, Mahlangu remains committed to instructing traditional Ndebele painting and beadwork within her community in the Mpumalanga province. This dedicated educator has been honored with prestigious awards such as France’s Officer of Arts and Letters and South Africa’s Order of Ikhamanga, reflecting her continued influence through a unique fusion of cultural heritage and modern creativity.
Esther Mahlangu: Time in Color runs through early 2025.
