Eternals’ Star Still Holds Out Hope

In an interview with Comicbook.com, one of the stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film that received the second most negative reviews expresses optimism about rejoining the Marvel franchise. Specifically, Gemma Chan, who played Sersi in Eternals, is hopeful that there may be more stories to tell for her character and the rest of the Eternals, a group of powerful beings engineered by extraterrestrial beings known as the Celestials.

2021 marked the arrival of “Eternals,” a Marvel Cinematic Universe production directed by the Academy Award-winning Chloé Zhao. In this film, we were introduced to the main characters and their longstanding conflict against their ancient adversaries, the Deviants, who have been at odds for thousands of years. However, despite the promise shown in the director’s talent, star-studded cast, and intriguing plot, “Eternals” was met with critical disappointment, earning a “rotten” rating of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. This places it as the second lowest-rated MCU film, trailing only behind “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania,” which scored 46%.

Although getting off to a rocky start, Gemma Chan remains optimistic about the possibility of The Eternals coming back for another installment. The actress believes that there is unresolved narrative and much more story left untold.

Who knows? Sometimes we’re the ones left in the dark. Frankly, I’m holding on to hope. It seems like there’s an untold tale here, a narrative that hasn’t reached its conclusion yet. We shall wait and see.

Could the Eternals Return in the Upcoming ‘Avengers’ Sequels?

Gemma Chan is correct in stating that there’s more to explore with the film, Eternals, setting up numerous fresh storylines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The movie concluded by suggesting that the Eternals were being manipulated by the Celestials as a means of determining whether humanity should be saved. Moreover, during the mid-credits scene, pop sensation Harry Styles was introduced as the brother of Thanos, Eros, also known as Starfox, while a post-credits sequence saw Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington’s character Dane Whitman discovering the powerful Ebony Blade and offering a sneak peek into Mahershala Ali portraying the role of Blade. Up to this point, these developments have not been concluded.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I had eagerly anticipated the start of production for Eternals 2. Unfortunately, the mixed reviews from critics and moderate ticket sales have led Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, to temporarily shelve any plans for a sequel. Last year, he stated that there are currently “no immediate plans” for a follow-up film in this franchise.

Currently, there’s no announced sequel to “Eternals”. However, in a recent trailer, there seems to be hints and references to certain significant ocean-originated events that have transpired. Some massive creatures emerged from the sea.

Although the Eternals might not headline another film, there’s a good chance some characters could reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The latest film, “Captain America: New World Order“, featured Tiamut, a deceased Celestial, showing that the Eternals mythology isn’t being completely ignored. Additionally, upcoming Avengers sequels like “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” are expected to be filled with characters from the MCU’s past, increasing the chances that Sersi might return in one of the Russo Brothers’ upcoming blockbusters.
