It was a time of change, as always, for the restless world of Ethereum. Vitalik Buterin, that young sage with the gaze of a man who’s seen too many memes and yet not enough rest, prepared to steer his creation in a direction few expected. The Moscow snows had not thawed so completely on his boots, nor the temptation to tinker on his conscience, and so he proclaimed: Ethereum must be made simple, more like its elder brother, Bitcoin, who did not fuss about every new bauble and trinket thrown its way.
One can almost picture him, staring at Ethereum’s complicated ledger, sighing as if the weight of all those cryptographic signatures bore down on his soul, and thinking: “Da, maybe the Bitcoiners were onto something.”
One of the best things about Bitcoin is how simple it is. This simplicity has lots of benefits. Let’s bring those benefits to Ethereum.

Has Ethereum Become an Oversized Samovar? ☕
The network once blossomed like Anna Karenina at a ball, hosting tales of DeFi, NFTs, DAOs—each one more extravagant than the last. But even in the grandest of Tolstoy’s novels, the parties cannot last forever. The cost of such opulence? Sluggish performance, towering gas fees, and developers praying to the blockchain gods that their dapps wouldn’t break from too much complexity.
Buterin, in a moment of Dostoevskian self-critique, admits the past errors: “Historically, Ethereum has often not done this (sometimes because of my own decisions), and this has contributed to much of our excessive development expenditure, all kinds of security risk, and insularity of R&D culture, often in pursuit of benefits that have proven illusory.” Ah, the ghosts of unnecessary features past—they still haunt him at night! 👻
Vitalik’s ‘Spring Cleaning’—The Road to Less is More
In May, Buterin posted a blog: “Simplifying the L1” (the ‘banya’ of Ethereum, if you will). He proposes paring things down, like a wise babushka cleaning the dacha before guests arrive. Among the notable housecleaning:
– Fewer Validator Signatures: Down from a crowd of 28,000 signatures to a humble 8,192 per slot. Fewer cryptographic chefs in the kitchen. At last, a network that’s less like a Moscow subway at rush hour!
– ZK-Friendly VM: Why settle for a regular VM, when you can have a sharply dressed ZK-friendly one, like RISC-V? Zero-knowledge proofs become so simple your techno-phobic uncle might finally grasp them (but let’s not aim too high).
– Standardizing Data Formats: No more custom data recipes passed among befuddled devs. Now, everything is one neat ledger, making it easier for newcomers and seasoned code-cossacks alike.
– Efficiency is the New Fashion: Ethereum, lighter on its feet, swifter and less susceptible to the tragic demise known as “congestion.” Possibly more fun at parties, too.
Tossing Philosophy at the Blockchain 👴
Bitcoin is Sasha, who does one thing (store value) and does it stoically. Ethereum is Pierre, never content, always inventing elaborate schemes that sometimes fall flat. But Vitalik is tired of Pierre’s chaos. Perhaps it’s time for Ethereum to read a few lines of Tolstoy and consider: “Happiness is in the simple; all else is commentary and debugging.”
Seeking Refuge in the Old Cypherpunk Dacha 🏚️
Buterin fears Ethereum will stray too far from its rebel roots—becoming a bureaucratic Kremlin of finance. Only through simplicity, privacy, and decentralization can the Ethereum proletariat be set free! Who needs gilded financial palaces when you could have a humble but decentralized hut with a working samovar?
The Crypto Peasants React
The villagers—sorry, the “community”—had thoughts:
Prioritizing simplicity now may slow progress, but it ensures Ethereum’s long-term resilience and broader developer participation. Worth the effort.

The reaction: “Da, finally! Fewer rules, fewer forms to fill, and perhaps a little more vodka at the meetings.”
The Road Forward—With Fewer Potholes?
What’s next in Vitalik’s grand plot? Specifications. Developer debates. Testing more rigorous than an incoming winter on the steppe. If all goes well, Ethereum may emerge leaner, quicker, and with fewer existential crises—a blockchain less War and Peace, more short story (with the occasional NFT goat 🐐).
Time will tell if this quest for simplicity ends in prosperity or, like many of Pierre’s escapades, just another lesson in humility. Stay tuned—if the network doesn’t crash in the meantime.
