As a seasoned cybersecurity researcher who has witnessed the ebb and flow of digital threats throughout my career, I must admit that the recent arrests in connection with the Holograph heist have brought a glimmer of hope to the otherwise dismal landscape of cryptocurrency crime. The collaborative efforts of international law enforcement agencies, spearheaded by France’s Office for the Prevention of Cybercrime, have been nothing short of commendable. The fact that they managed to recover 80% of the stolen tokens is truly a testament to their tenacity and expertise.
A number of people associated with a major €13 million ($14.4 million) heist using the Holograph protocol have been apprehended by both Italian and French authorities. This significant breakthrough comes after a thorough two-month investigation spearheaded by France’s Cybercrime Prevention Office, the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme (BRI), Europol, Italy’s Anti-Mafia Investigations Directorate, and the Cayman Islands police.
On June 13, 2024, the well-known omnichain tokenization platform Holograph was targeted by a complex hack. The intruders discovered a weakness in the platform’s operator contract and used it to produce and steal an astounding 1 billion HLG tokens, equivalent to around €13 million. This cyberattack resulted in a steep decline of over 80% in the value of HLG, causing substantial financial losses.
In my role as a researcher, I am delighted to announce that following an exhausting two-month manhunt by France’s Office for the Prevention of Cybercrime (OFAC), BRI, Europol, the Italian Directorate of Anti-Mafia Investigations, and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS), we have successfully apprehended several individuals.

Following the cyberattack, the stolen tokens were swiftly transformed into Tether (USDT). As soon as the incident occurred, authorities launched an immediate manhunt for the suspects, mobilizing resources across numerous nations. The subsequent investigation uncovered that the perpetrators were in their thirties and hailed from Eastern Europe. Initially, they were thought to be living in France, leading to a joint international effort aimed at apprehending them.
On August 7, 2024, Italian authorities made a crucial move by apprehending four individuals—two males and two females, all around thirty years old. This arrest took place in Italy, with assistance from French forces. The key suspect, previously associated with Holograph, is accused of having inside information that enabled the cyber attack.
After the arrests, the authorities confiscated substantial assets and devices from the suspects, and certain funds have been placed under hold. The suspects are currently waiting to be extradited to France, where they will encounter more legal action. French investigators have stated that they have already retrieved about 80% of the stolen tokens, which has lessened some of the financial losses for Holograph.
Since then, Holograph has tightened up its operational risk measures to avert similar occurrences in the future. The ongoing probe is primarily concerned with examining the confiscated proof and retrieving the remaining misappropriated funds. As this situation unfolds, everyone, including Holograph and the wider cryptocurrency fraternity, are on tenterhooks for more information regarding asset recovery and updates on the investigation’s advancements.
