As a devoted fan and avid gamer of HBO’s groundbreaking series, Euphoria, I’ve been following the show’s development with bated breath since its inception. The raw, unfiltered portrayal of teenage life has captivated audiences worldwide, and the fact that it has only been two seasons but already earned critical acclaim and numerous awards is a testament to its power.
Euphoria is one of HBO’s biggest series, having cultivated a very devoted audience while also becoming a critical darling that has been nominated for — and won — some of the television industry’s most prestigious awards. The show has done all of this with only two seasons under its belt, earning a third season renewal soon after the Season 2 finale. And that’s when things began to take a turn for the series. Season 2 concluded in 2022, and while recent reports have indicated Season 3 will premiere in 2025, it has been a long road to the much-delayed third season, thanks to emerging film careers, difficulty finding the right narrative direction and, according to a new report, a fractured relationship between star Zendaya and series creator Sam Levinson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, things have taken a turn for the worse behind the scenes of “Euphoria.” Since wrapping up Season 2, the dynamic between Zendaya and creator Sam Levinson has reportedly shifted. At one point, they were extremely close, working together on the film “Malcolm & Marie” during the pandemic while “Euphoria” Season 2 was delayed. However, their relationship is now said to be tense. The primary cause of this strain appears to be Levinson’s increased focus on his poorly-received series “The Idol,” and Zendaya prioritizing her film projects over “Euphoria” Season 3.
Zendaya Reportedly Had Issues With Sam Levinson’s Focus on HBO’s The Idol
As a dedicated fan of both Euphoria and The Weeknd, I’ve been eagerly anticipating The Idol as The Weeknd’s grand acting debut. However, according to recent reports, Sam Levinson has allegedly prioritized developing The Idol over delivering scripts for Euporhia’s third season, leaving me and other fans feeling frustrated. Zendaya, who plays a pivotal role in Euphoria, reportedly expressed her concerns to HBO executives Casey Bloys and Francesca Orsi, fearing that the production company was neglecting an established hit for another project. The situation grew more alarming when rumors surfaced about The Idol’s chaotic production, with Levinson creating a toxic work environment and reportedly going way over budget. Given the disturbing stories emerging from the set, it’s no wonder that Zendaya’s fans, including myself, have been urging her to steer clear of Levinson’s troubled production. With 183 million Instagram followers, that call to action must have been a thunderous appeal for the actress.
From my perspective as a passionate fan, it’s been disappointing to hear some critics point the finger at Zendaya for the delays in “Euphoria.” However, according to one report, her burgeoning film career might be the reason. With blockbuster hits like “Spider-Man” and “Dune” under her belt, as well as critically acclaimed performances in “Challengers,” it’s no wonder her schedule has filled up quickly.
“According to a reliable insider, Zendaya was criticized by someone close to Levinson for being hesitant, with the implication that she was focusing on her own blossoming film career, featuring roles in ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Dune,’ and Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’ at Cannes. The source emphasized, ‘It was all about her. Everyone wanted to make it about Sam, but it was actually her.’ “
As a devoted fan, I find it intriguing that some people criticize Zendaya’s flourishing film career given how significantly the acting careers of many “Euphoria” cast members have escalated since the show’s debut. Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Colman Domingo are all deeply engaged in their movie projects with numerous films in different production stages. While Zendaya, as the leading lady and most recognizable face of the series, is an obvious target for such comments, it’s crucial to remember that “Euphoria” is an ensemble piece. For a potential third season, having most of the cast present would be vital.
As a gamer, I’ve come across my fair share of challenges in the virtual world. But in the case of “Euphoria,” there are some personal and unfortunate obstacles that have hindered its progress. I used to be close friends with producer Kevin Turen, who once worked on our project at HBO. Tragically, he passed away at 44 years old. Things between us and him had turned sour, which might have led to the loss of his deal with HBO. With multiple projects under his belt, including one with The Weeknd and Jenna Ortega, Kevin had priorities other than “Euphoria.”
HBO’s critically panned and ratings-poor show “The Idol” caused additional challenges for the “Euphoria” team. Amidst reports of problematic behavior from creator Sam Levinson on set, they also mourned the loss of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, who passed away last summer. These complications have reportedly hindered the production of “Euphoria” Season 3. Before its official announcement for a 2025 release, rumors suggested that Levinson struggled to develop a compelling storyline for the upcoming season. An idea involving Zendaya’s character Rue as a private detective was proposed but rejected by both the actress and the network. Another concept with Rue as a surrogate mother also failed to gain traction. However, a recent report indicates that Levinson and Zendaya may now be working together on a potential idea for the new season. It seems that some of “Euphoria’s” drama has extended beyond the screen.
