Euphoria Star Austin Abrams to Lead Resident Evil Reboot!

The eagerly awaited remake of Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian), could potentially have Austin Abrams on board as its lead actor. According to Deadline, Abrams is in preliminary discussions about joining the Resident Evil cast. As of now, it’s unclear whether he will play an existing character from the franchise or a fresh creation by Cregger and co-writer Shay Hatten.

Beyond his roles in “Wolfs” alongside Brad Pitt and George Clooney, as well as his portrayal of Ethan Lewis in “Euphoria”, Abrams also played Ron Anderson for nine episodes across the fifth and sixth seasons of “The Walking Dead”. In these episodes, Abrams’ character evolved from a complex individual into an adversary for Rick Grimes and his group within the Alexandria Safe Zone. Furthermore, Abrams has previously appeared in “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”, adding to his impressive resume in horror films.

Details about the upcoming Resident Evil movie, in production at Sony Pictures, are being tightly guarded, but it’s hinted that the movie will revisit the original themes from the early video games. Initial whispers pointed towards the film being based on the 2002 game, Resident Evil Zero, a prequel to the 1996 release, however, as no official announcements have been made yet, these plot and character speculations remain speculative for now. The movie is slated for a release on September 18, 2026.

Upcoming movie by Cregger, titled “Arms“, boasts Abrams as a co-star, alongside Josh Brolin (replacing Pedro Pascal according to reports), Julia Garner, and Amy Madigan. Known as a multi-narrative horror masterpiece similar to Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia“, the film ignited a fierce competition among studios following the acclaimed and profitable release of “Barbarian“. In the end, New Line Cinema secured the rights. The anticipated movie is set to premiere in theaters on Aug. 8, 2025.

Can Cregger Finanlly Deliver the ‘Resident Evil’ Film Fans Crave?

The film series based on Resident Evil, spanning both big and small screens, has had an uneven journey. Initiated in 2002 by director Paul W.S. Anderson, the initial movie introduced Milla Jovovich as Alice, a character created specifically for this film adaptation. The movie was successful enough to trigger five follow-ups, each offering a mix of action and horror, drawing heavily from various game storylines and characters. However, these sequels saw a gradual decline in both creative and critical acclaim.

After that, we saw the release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, an endeavor aimed at returning the series to its roots by adapting the initial two video games. However, this was quite a challenge for a single movie, resulting in mixed reviews from both critics and fans. The film has received a relatively low rating of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s general consensus expressing doubts about whether the games are suitable for a big-screen adaptation.

2022 saw Netflix reintroduce the franchise through a TV show, yet even this failed to captivate audiences and was terminated after just one season. However, if Cregger’s spine-tingling terror in the film “Barbarian” is any indication, then spectators can expect an exhilarating cinematic journey at least.
