Reflecting on these talented young actors who have portrayed our beloved Spock at different stages of his life, each brings a unique energy and charm to the iconic character.
Amongst all the characters produced over the extensive Star Trek series, very few are as adored as Spock. Known for his stoic demeanor and wise insights, this Vulcan character has become virtually identical with the iconic picture of the show that Gene Roddenberry conceived. Although Leonard Nimoy provided what is generally considered the quintessential portrayal of Spock, other performers have also left indelible marks on the role. Meanwhile, there are numerous actors, many of whom have been largely overlooked, who briefly played Spock for a fleeting instant.
Today, the influence of Spock lives on as Ethan Peck takes on the role in the well-received series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s clear that this Vulcan will carry on the tradition of “Live long and prosper,” ensuring a continued presence in future Star Trek productions. In examining each actor who has portrayed Spock, we will arrange them in order of their appearances.
11 Leonard Nimoy
As a passionate film buff, I can’t help but associate the name “Spock” with one man – Leonard Nimoy. Although he graced numerous roles across his illustrious career, Spock remains his undeniable masterpiece. It was his initial portrayal of the character in Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired from 1966 to 1969, that first linked him with Spock. However, it was more than just being first; it was his exceptional acting that made him the quintessential Spock. From his distinctive Vulcan salute to his expressive raised eyebrow, and lines that have now become part of pop culture, Nimoy embodied Spock in a way that left an indelible mark. He even extended this persona into his writing and music, immersing himself deeply into the character, with occasional deviations along the journey.
Despite other actors taking on the role before him, Leonard Nimoy portrayed Spock in Star Trek longer than any other actor, accumulating numerous credits as the logical Vulcan. His last appearance as the character in Star Trek: Into Darkness, starting from his initial performance, spanned 47 years – a record surpassed by very few actors, mostly those working in soap operas. The death of Leonard Nimoy in 2015 at the age of 83 was deeply felt within the fandom, but he will always be revered for his influential portrayal of Spock on Star Trek.

Billy Simpson initially appeared as Spock in a minor, uncredited role in “Yesteryear” episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series during his youth. Despite having a brief stint and limited roles, he left an enduring mark on entertainment through his work as a Demented News correspondent for the Dr. Demento Show. This iconic radio program showcased societal outcasts and fringe artists, with many recognizing him from Rainn Wilson’s portrayal of the DJ in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

9 Carl Steven
In “Star Trek III: The Quest for Spock,” several young actors got the chance to portray the renowned Vulcan character due to its time-traveling narrative. Among them was Carl Steven, who played a 9-year-old Spock. Afterward, Carl Steven had a relatively small but varied career in television, film, and voice acting. He is particularly recognized for his roles as Tommy Pervis in “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” or the voice of Fred Jones in “A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.”

In this context, Vadia Potenza portrayed a 13-year-old version of Spock in “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.” This role is his most notable, but his IMDb profile contains limited information as he has mainly worked behind the scenes, accumulating 21 editor credits. More recently, Potenza served as an associate producer on the 2022 independent comedy “UFO Club,” which currently boasts a rating of 8.1 based on just 15 reviews. 7 Stephen Manley
In the movie “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” it was Stephen Manley who took on the role of a 17-year-old Spock. Among all the actors chosen to portray a younger Spock, Manley has become a reliable presence in the industry, even if his roles have tended to be smaller or in independent productions. Despite this, he continues to work and has some intriguing upcoming projects. One of these is his role as Adolf Hitler in the sci-fi TV series “The Time War.”

6 Joe W. Davis
Joe W. Davis, who portrayed the younger Spock in “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” at age 25, is the actor last in line for this role. There’s not a lot of information available about Davis beyond his role in Star Trek, and his subsequent performances were minor appearances in mostly forgotten projects. One notable exception is his brief appearance in the John Cusack-led film “Better Off Dead.”

5 Frank Welker
Known to fewer than the average household, Frank Welker has made quite an impact in the world of voice acting with over 800 roles under his belt. From the latest Transformers series, Scooby-Doo since 2002, Curious George, Baby Kermit, and multiple characters on The Simpsons, to name a few, Welker’s career is nothing short of impressive. It comes as no surprise that he was chosen to voice Spock in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, although this may seem like a minor credit compared to his extensive resume. Frank Welker supplied the screams of Spock in this classic film.

4 Zachary Quinto
Zachary Quinto certainly had big shoes to fill when he became the first real successor to Leonard Nimoy’s Spock when he was cast in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 action sci-fi epicStar Trek. Leading up to this role Quinto was a relatively unknown name with his only major credit predating his stepping into the role of Vulcan, coming via a recurring role as Adam Kaufman in the popular series 24 starring Kiefer Sutherland.
In a period sandwiched between Leonard Nimoy and Ethan Peck, Zachary Quinto’s portrayal of Spock, though often overshadowed today, was highly appreciated initially. Many now believe his version deserves more attention when considering the character’s overall legacy. Unlike previous interpretations, Quinto’s Spock showcased a younger, impulsive side that hadn’t been seen in Nimoy’s portrayal, earning Leonard Nimoy’s approval as he saw Quinto as a suitable successor to his iconic character.

1 Ethan Peck
Making his debut in season two of Star Trek: Discovery (2017-2024), Ethan Peck, previously an unrecognized actor, quickly won over fans and the news of him returning to redefine the original series in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was met with enthusiasm. Prior to his portrayal as Spock, Peck had only appeared in minor roles on a few TV shows and smaller independent films. Remarkably, despite his lack of extensive acting background, Peck has proven himself to be the ideal choice for the role of Spock.
Although some might argue that it’s all about the voice, Peck’s soothing yet profound tones evoke memories of Nimoy in a manner that stirs nostalgia. However, it’s the harmonious blend of emotions and logical thinking that truly makes his portrayal feel genuine and true to Spock’s established character. Moreover, Ethan Peck received accolades from the Nimoy family, with Adam Nimoy, Leonard’s son, openly expressing approval for Peck’s performance. He particularly admired Peck’s ability to introduce a fresh perspective while staying faithful to Spock’s heritage and significance within the fan community.
