Adventuring solo can be risky in the game ‘Avowed‘. Fortunately, the latest role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment comes with four comrades to accompany you on your journey.
Each contributes a distinct array of talents, each drawing inspiration from traditional RPG character archetypes such as the warrior, the marksman, the healer, and the sorcerer.
As one of the team members, I’m only allowed to take two of my comrades with me on our missions, leaving the rest behind at base camp to engage in their own conversations and strategies.
With that being said, who are the best companions in Avowed? Let’s rank them!
4. Marius
The Ranger
Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Hunter’s Sense | Orders Marius to scan for enemies, loot, and plants in the Living Lands. |
Binding Roots | Marius uses his wilderness lore to Root an enemy in place for 8 sec. |
Heart Seeker | Marius aims and fires a piercing shot that always hits its mark, passing through any obstacles in its path. |
Shadow Step | Marius vanishes into a cloud of smoke, then reappears near an enemy and slashes them with his daggers. He repeats this up to 3 times. |
Wounding Shot | Marius’ attacks deal Bleed Accumulation. |
On paper, Marius appears to excel in various aspects, particularly as a long-range attacker capable of inflicting bleed effects, immobilizing enemies, and dishing out immense damage using his Heart Seeker skill. However, once you encounter Yatzli, it quickly becomes evident that Marius has several notable flaws.
To be honest, I’ve always found his Binding Roots more of a decorative feature than a useful tool for crowd control. It hasn’t really worked for me in my gaming experience, and considering it’s a key ability, this is something that needs addressing. My playstyle might be part of the issue, but even so, an essential move not delivering as expected can create quite a challenge.
Marius is far from being a poor choice; in fact, he inflicts significant damage and can certainly complete tasks effectively if you appreciate him. However, it’s unfortunate that there are others who surpass him in terms of companionship skills.
3. Kai
The Tank

Abilities | Description |
Firestarter | Orders Kai to burn away webs, brambles, or other flammable obstacles. |
Fire and Ire | Kai fires a powerful shot from his blunderbuss, dealing high Stun to a single enemy and Taunting them for 10 sec. |
Unbending Defense | Kai steels his mind to regenerate Health and increase his Damage Reduction by 25%. |
Ardous Delay of Motion | Yatzli manipulates the arcane energy around an enemy, slowing them for 10 seconds. |
Blast | Yatzli’s attacks burst into a small area of effect when they hit an enemy. |
I have a strong affection for Kai, as he’s not only my preferred narrative partner but also highly proficient at completing tasks. Yet, his presence in the group is somewhat conspicuous compared to someone like Yatzli.
Giatta’s healing prowess is so impressive that often Kai’s tanking skills aren’t essential in every situation. In less demanding situations, he can handle things just fine, and his talent for diverting dangerous foes is truly beneficial.
In other words, since there are just four characters in “Avowed”, it’s inevitable that one of them would rank lower.
If you require a character who can consistently draw enemy attention during an entire battle, Kai would be a great pick. However, if maintaining aggro isn’t a priority for your gameplay, there might be other characters with superior performance.
2. Yatzli
The Mage

Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Dispel Illusion | Orders Yatzli to dispel a magical illusion and surrender its secrets. |
Essence Explosion | Yatzli invokes a strange arcane power that explodes upon hitting an enemy, releasing a burst of Essence and Explosive Damage. |
Minoletta’s Missile Battery | Yatzli conjures a volley of arcane missiles that seek out nearby enemies. |
Ardous Delay of Motion | Yatzli manipulates the arcane energy around an enemy, slowing them for 10 seconds. |
Blast | Yatzli’s attacks burst into a small area of effect when they hit an enemy. |
As a dedicated spellblade player, focusing on enchanting spells and magical assaults, I find myself unable to resist including Yatzli in my party whenever possible. Her power is simply too compelling to ignore!
Yatzli follows up brilliantly with a powerful combination after I summon Blizzard, as Essence Explosion and Minoleta’s Missile Battery cause massive destruction in return.
Yatzli impressed me because she could stand on her own, even when I wasn’t utilizing my abilities in sync with hers.
(Another way)
What really sold me on Yatzli was her independence. She didn’t need me to combine my skills with hers to hold her own.
You can’t add Yatzli to your party roster right away, but she’ll prove to be quite valuable when you eventually can, so it’s worth being patient.
1. Giatta
The Healer

Abilities | Description |
---|---|
Spectral Jolt | Orders Giatta to empower and activate essence generators. |
Purification | Giatta calls forth an invigorating wave of energy that heals allies by 25% of their maximum Health. |
Barrier | Giatta grants all allies a shield that provides Temporary Health for 20 seconds. |
Acceleration | Giatta increases the Move Speed and Attack Speed of all allies for 15 seconds. |
Reconstruction | Giatta’s attacks heal all allies by a small amount. |
Giatta is a healer with a focus on mending wounds. While her offensive capabilities might not be top-tier, she’s perfectly fine letting others bask in the limelight during battles.
I have no issues with that, since she excels as a healer, ensuring our group stays strong and resilient through the toughest battles.
It’s noticeable how different things are when Giaevtta is or isn’t present in the group. Her capability to heal and safeguard all allies can significantly shift the course of a battle, making Reconstruction an outstanding skill for maintaining your party’s strength and vitality.
I had some doubts initially about Giatta’s performance, given my team setup has a lot of healing options. However, she’s proven to be an indispensable part of my squad, and I rarely exclude her from the team unless absolutely necessary.
