As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours exploring the vast realms of cinematic artistry, I am thrilled to share my thoughts on the upcoming additions to Max in August 2024. The streaming service has always been a go-to destination for me, thanks to its extensive collection of programs from renowned studios like HBO, BBC Studios, and Cartoon Network.
Max, formerly (and still in some regions) known as HBO Max, is among the top streaming services in the world, thanks to the wide range of programs it offers from libraries of Discovery, HBO, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and many others. Furthermore, the streamer is well-known for producing its own content under the “Max Originals” banner, collaborating with prominent production companies such as BBC Studios.
2024 will bring several well-known movies from Max to August’s lineup, including the eagerly awaited titles “Love Lies Bleeding” and “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!”, scheduled for release in July. Although no new productions are slated for August, don’t forget that Max still boasts some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films available next month. To help you plan, here is a list of all the movies coming to Max in August 2024.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Streaming August 1
over the decades, various interpretations of Sherlock Holmes have emerged, but Robert Downey Jr.’s witty portrayal in Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” film stands out as a unique and captivating take on the legendary detective. In this Oscar-recognized production, Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to hunt down the infamous killer Blackwood and bring an end to his reign of terror.
When the murderer inexplicably rises from the dead and continues his rampage, the pair sets out on a fresh journey to track him down once more. In this thrilling movie, featuring Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, and Robert Maillet, you’ll be able to stream it starting Aug. 1 on Max.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Streaming August 1
The beloved animated series “How to Train Your Dragon” is often hailed as one of the greatest animation franchises ever created. So far, it has produced three movies: “How to Train Your Dragon” (2010), “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014), and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (2019). With a live-action adaptation on the horizon, now is the perfect opportunity to rewatch the original film that kickstarted this fantastic journey.
In the year 2010, the captivating action-adventure film “How to Train Your Dragon” was released. This tale follows Hiccup, a young Viking, who has grown up listening to stories about dragons terrorizing their villages. Despite being forbidden from leaving his community, Hiccup’s insatiable curiosity leads him on an unexpected journey into the fray of battle. There, he encounters a hurt Night Fury dragon and spares its life instead of killing it. As they form a connection during a perilous situation, Hiccup discovers that he might be able to bring harmony between humans and dragons by uncovering their misunderstood natures. Starting Aug. 1, “How to Train Your Dragon” will become available on Max.
Taken (2008)
Streaming August 1
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the thrilling experience that is Liam Neeson’s “Taken.” In this action-packed masterpiece, Neeson delivers an unforgettable portrayal of Bryan Mills, a former CIA agent. The film, skillfully directed by Pierre Morel, takes us on a rollercoaster ride as we follow Bryan, who resides in tranquil California, not far from his 17-year-old daughter Kim.
Despite residing with her mother Lenore and wealthy stepfather Stuart, Kim maintains a connection with her father, Bryan. One day, when Kim and her friends jet off to Paris, they unfortunately fall into the hands of human traffickers, oblivious to the fact that Bryan would go to great lengths to ensure their safety. (Starting Aug. 1, “Taken” will be streamable on Max.)
The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
Streaming August 18
2016’s “The Legend of Tarzan” offers a modern take on the well-known tale, focusing on John Clayton who abandoned his past as Tarzan to inherit the Clayton estate. Although it didn’t quite meet viewer expectations for a Tarzan movie, it still brought a refreshing twist with impressive acting by stars Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, and Christopher Waltz. The film’s summary goes like this:
For years, I, Alexander Skarsgård – once Tarzan of the African jungles – lived a refined life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with my cherished wife Jane (Margot Robbie) by my side. Now, Parliament has summoned me back to the heart of the Congo, unbeknownst to me that I’m being manipulated in a deadly game of greed and revenge orchestrated by the ruthless Belgian Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). Little do they know, their treacherous plans are about to be met with an unwelcome force.
The Legend of Tarzan will be available on Max on Aug. 18.
