Max, known as HBO Max previously, boasts an impressive user base and a vast library of films and TV series. The recent rebranding may not have significantly affected its marketing, but the variety and suitability of its content for viewers has expanded. Monthly, it adds numerous new movies to its collection, and is renowned for creating original programming that has been a hit among its audience.
As a lifelong movie buff, I am beyond excited about the lineup of films that Max has prepared for us movie enthusiasts this January 2025! Having grown up with popular franchises and being a fan of video games, I can’t wait to see these adaptations come to life on the big screen. The combination of action-packed movies and forgotten video game stories is sure to make for an unforgettable cinematic experience. I can hardly wait to settle in and immerse myself in this diverse selection of films that Max has curated for us all!
‘Fast & Furious’ (2009)
Streaming January 1
In 2009, the movie titled “Fast & Furious” was released, serving as a direct continuation from “The Fast and the Furious” (2001) and “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003). It also marked the fourth chapter in the popular franchise. Under the guidance of director Justin Lin, this film is considered one of the top-notch installments in the series, bringing back the legendary team of Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner.
In the very same streets that sparked their friendship long ago, Dom and Brian find themselves reunited, needing to momentarily set aside their past disagreements to tackle a mutual threat – a colossal heroin operation. Starting January 1st, you can stream Fast & Furious on Max.
‘Uncharted’ (2022)
Streaming January 15
Uncharted, derived from a well-known video game series, presents an action-packed adventure movie featuring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. The plot follows the journey of Nathan Drake, a streetwise individual, who teams up with experienced treasure seeker Victor Sullivan in search of Magellan’s 500-year-old legacy.
Initially, I thought I was merely witnessing a typical heist story unfold, but what transpired was a thrilling globe-trotting odyssey that unraveled one of the planet’s most intriguing enigmas. Although it may not be the epitome of video game adaptations, Uncharted offers an engaging cinematic experience that is perfect for a casual movie night out. Mark your calendars, as it will be gracing Max screens starting January 15th.
‘Warcraft’ (2016)
Streaming January 1
The movie titled “Warcraft” had the potential to initiate an impressive series of films, potentially encompassing a trilogy, yet regrettably, this didn’t materialize. Nevertheless, the 2016 fantasy production is a delightful interpretation from the video game world, albeit a decade in the making. Despite these delays, Warcraft has garnered both critical and commercial success, securing a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences and generating $440 million against a production budget of $160 million. The film’s official summary is as follows:
[Official Synopsis for Warcraft]
In an attempt to flee his deteriorating world, the shaman Gul’dan employs ominous sorcery to create a gateway into the realm of humans, Azeroth. Accompanied by the relentless warrior Blackhand, Gul’dan mobilizes the orc tribes into an aggressive army known as the Horde. Meanwhile, in opposition to these colossal invaders, King Llane, the formidable warrior Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel), and the potent sorcerer Medivh rally their forces. As both races clash, leaders on either side begin to ponder if conflict is the sole resolution.
Warcraft will be available for streaming on Max on Jan. 1.
‘A Different Man’ (2024)
Streaming January 17
The standout performance by Sebastian Stan in “A Different Man” might be his most impressive work yet, where he portrays Edward, a passionate actor yearning for acceptance. To fit societal norms, Edward decides to undergo a facial transformation surgery, believing his original appearance to be unsightly. However, the surgery bestows him with a handsome visage, but in doing so, it strips him of the one thing that imbued his life with purpose: the acting role he was destined to embody.
Edward becomes consumed with the desire to recover what was once his, but is it feasible? The movie, classified as a comedy-drama, has elements of a psychological thriller and does an impressive job portraying this. If you haven’t had a chance to see A Different Man yet, it will be available on Max starting January 17th.
