As a cinephile who’s spent countless hours lost in the magic of cinema, I must say that this list is quite a treat! From timeless classics like “The Mummy” (1932) and “The Wolf Man” (1941), to modern masterpieces such as “The Usual Suspects” (1995) and “V for Vendetta” (2006), there’s a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be explored.
In September, Prime Video’s original movie selection may seem slim, with only the crime-drama “Killer Heat,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, arriving at the end of the month. However, the platform is expanding its library with numerous existing titles, ranging from timeless cult classics to blockbuster hits. For those eagerly anticipating Halloween and a month filled with horror, there’s an opportunity to kick off the spooky season early by revisiting popular choices such as “Army of Darkness,” “Child’s Play,” “Drag Me to Hell,” “Killer Clowns From Outer Space,” and “Jeepers Creepers.”
Amazon Prime Video is overflowing with fresh content, making it challenging to select the standouts. For your convenience, here are some titles we believe are worth your viewing time this September. Take a look at the list below to discover what piques your interest.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Streaming on September 1
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself engrossed in a chilling gothic horror adaptation of Bram Stoker’s timeless novel, “Dracula,” from 1897. The film intricately followed several characters entwined with the mysterious Count Dracula, portrayed by Gary Oldman. My journey delved into the captivating backstory of this elusive count. I was also witness to the fateful encounter between Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) and the enigmatic Count, followed by a brewing conflict when the vampire’s gaze fell upon Mina (Winona Ryder). To add another layer to this supernatural tale, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) made his appearance in an attempt to put an end to Dracula’s reign of terror.
In 1992, Francis Ford Coppola breathed new life into the classic vampire character for contemporary audiences with “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” This film was a blockbuster, earning over $215 million at the box office on a budget of just $40 million and scooping up three Academy Awards in costume design, sound editing, and makeup. To this day, its haunting aesthetic, mesmerizing acting, and deep themes continue to resonate. If you’re planning some Halloween-themed movie nights next month, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” could be an excellent warm-up. Starting September 1st, you can stream “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”
Snack Shack (2024)
Streaming on September 3
In the steamy summer of 1991, nestled in Nebraska City, the story unfolds with Snack Shack, focusing on two buddies, AJ and Moose, who are known for their slick schemes and conning to finance their bashes and side ventures, such as bootlegging. However, when their parents uncover their shady activities and their beer stash is confiscated, they opt for a legitimate change and buy the community pool’s snack stand. To their surprise, the stand doesn’t immediately become a cash cow, and they find themselves putting in extra effort to make it profitable. Matters get more intricate when both AJ and Moose develop feelings for Brooke, a feisty military brat.
The movie Snack Shack, much like the comedies of the ’90s, leans towards crass and raunchy humor, reminiscent of films such as Animal House or Porky’s. However, what sets it apart from other lowbrow comedies is its deep understanding and portrayal of adolescence, capturing both its awkwardness and profound moments with the sensitivity often found in a John Hughes script. Director Adam Reheimer, known for his exceptional comedic skills, has delivered another masterpiece with Snack Shack, following his critically acclaimed film Dinner in America. You can stream Snack Shack starting September 3.
Paddington 2 (2018)
Streaming on September 26
After the happenings of the first movie, Paddington Bear continues to thrive with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens. In celebration of Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, he buys a captivating London pop-up book as a gift. Eager to save up for it, our beloved bear embarks on a string of unusual jobs. However, when he sees the book stolen one evening and sets off in pursuit, he is wrongly accused and imprisoned despite the store owner and Browns’ insisting on his innocence. While incarcerated, Paddington forms an alliance with a surly chef and gradually wins over the prison inhabitants, eventually leading to a daring escape and efforts to exonerate himself.
If you haven’t watched the initial film from the series, don’t worry! You can still enjoy Paddington 2 independently; it’s frequently acclaimed as the best installment. However, both films are widely recognized as modern classics, known for their charming, sweet appeal that has earned them praise from fans and critics alike. If you’re looking for a heartwarming, comical, family-friendly adventure, the Paddington series is your go-to choice. The first Paddington film is currently available on Prime Video, and with the upcoming release of Paddington in Peru in January 2025, now’s the perfect moment for fans to revisit both classics. Paddington 2 will be streaming on Sept. 26.
