A Disturbance Unfolds – An Upcoming Horror Film
Village of the Damned (1995)
Streaming December 1
Under the guidance of director John Carpenter, the movie titled “Village of the Damned” is frequently considered one of his less impressive works. However, looking back on it after all these years, we can see that it showcases some exceptional traditional storytelling techniques. This film serves as a modern adaptation of the 1960 movie with the same name, which in turn was based on John Wyndham’s 1957 novel “The Midwich Cuckoos“.
In the secluded village of Midwich, an unusual event occurs where both humans and animals lose consciousness simultaneously, only to regain it without explanation. However, a peculiar twist follows: all the women in the village inexplicably become pregnant. After nine months have passed, these babies are born, not as typical human infants, but as exceptionally beautiful children. Yet, it doesn’t take long for their parents to discern that these children are far from human. Starting December 1st, “Village of the Damned” will be available on Shudder.
Dead Calm (1989)
Streaming December 1
As a cinephile, I’d say that ‘Dead Calm’ stands out among horror films due to its masterful storytelling and gripping performances that keep you on the edge of your seat. It delves into psychological terror, with most of the violence subtly hinted at, allowing our imaginations to fill in the blanks. The film is a testament to director Philip Noyce’s skill, featuring an illustrious cast including Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, and Billy Zane. Here’s a brief overview of ‘Dead Calm’: A story that will keep you guessing and leave you breathless with suspense.
Rae Ingram (played by Nicole Kidman) and her spouse, John (Sam Neill), grapple with the unexpected demise of their young son. Seeking solace, they embark on a lengthy cruise aboard their yacht to deal with their grief. While sailing far out at sea, they encounter a foundering vessel and save its lone survivor, Hughie Warriner (portrayed by Billy Zane). Hughie asserts that the crew succumbed to food poisoning. Whilst Rae feels compassion for Hughie, John harbors doubts about his tale.
Dead Calm, released in 1989, will be available for streaming on Shudder on Dec. 1.
Last Straw (2023)
Streaming December 20
Working night shifts might appear tranquil due to reduced social engagement, but that’s far from the truth in the upcoming horror film, “Last Straw,” directed by Alan Scott Neal. The movie, starring Jessica Belkin, focuses on Nancy Osborn, a diligent waitress who works nights at her father’s diner and is about to take on a managerial role.
Initially, the tranquil evening takes an unexpected turn for the worse as a gang of masked teenagers on mopeds attempt to play a prank on her. Even after reporting the matter to the police, the situation spirals out of control when Sheriff Brooks from the local precinct shows up at the diner, alleging that a masked murderer armed with a hammer is running rampant. Will Nancy make it through the night given that this menacing figure has marked her as his main target? Last Straw will premiere on Shudder on December 20, 2024.
