As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for dark and revenge-driven narratives, I can hardly contain my excitement for The Crow’s return to the big screen. Having grown up watching the original 1994 film, I hold it close to heart as one of those formative cinematic experiences that shaped my love for storytelling through movies.
Over the years, filmmaking has significantly advanced, leading to the creation of various new genres and subgenres like horror, Westerns, and sci-fi. In the initial months of 2024, some truly captivating movies have premiered in cinemas, featuring titles such as Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
As we move into the second part of the year and summer starts to wind down, there are still some major films set to premiere at the cinema. In July, we were treated to movies like “Longlegs,” “Twisters,” and “Despicable Me 4.” August looks just as promising, with a romance drama adapted from a New York Times bestseller and an eagerly awaited new “Alien” installment in the pipeline. Here’s a rundown of every film scheduled for release in August 2024.
Trap
Watch It in Theaters on August 2
M. Night Shyamalan’s films have been a mix of successes and misses throughout his career. However, when he gets it right, his movies leave a lasting impression, as demonstrated by “The Sixth Sense,” “Split,” and “Signs.” In his latest project, the acclaimed director is once again taking the helm with “Trap,” a new psychological thriller that he has written, directed, and produced himself.
During a lively pop concert attendance by Josh Harnett, a father and his daughter unwittingly find themselves trapped inside. Unbeknownst to them, law enforcement have set up an intricate plan to capture a notorious murderer infamously titled The Butcher. However, contrary to popular belief, it is Harnett’s character who assumes this sinister role. With the police closing in, he must employ his cunning and evasion tactics to elude capture. The film “Trap” hits theaters on Aug. 2.
Harold and the Purple Crayon
Watch It in Theaters on August 2
Zachary Levi has become known for his entertaining acting, showcased in “Shazam!”, and now he’s bringing excitement to younger audiences with a new concept based on the classic tale. In “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, a forthcoming adventure comedy film, Harold, from the beloved book of the same name, comes to life. He grows beyond the pages and enters the real world as he continues to draw.
In “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” Harold comes to understand that there’s much more for him to discover about himself and the universe. However, when his ability to imagine is misused by others, he must team up with his companions to protect the world from harm. The film is set to premiere in cinemas on Aug. 2.
It Ends With Us
Watch It in Theaters on August 9
As a huge fan of Coleen Hoover’s novel “It Ends With Us,” I can’t wait to see how Lily’s heart-wrenching story unfolds on the big screen. In her twenties, Lily embarks on a new journey in love with the passionate neurosurgeon Ryle. But just as things seem to be going right, her past returns to haunt them both. Her ex-lover interferes, and before we know it, their relationship spirals into abuse. I’m eagerly anticipating this film adaptation, which boasts an impressive cast including Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Brandon Sklenar, Amy Morton, and Jenny Slate. The film is set to premiere in theaters on Aug. 9.
Borderlands
Watch It in Theaters on August 9
The film “Borderlands,” which is both co-written and directed by Eli Roth, is an upcoming action-adventure production. This movie is based on the popular video game of the same title. It’s interesting to note that it took nearly a decade for this project to materialize, with plans for a film adaptation first being announced back in 2015.
Featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, and Jack Black, this film introduces a quirky ensemble of characters: Roland, a mercenary; Tiny Tina, a rebellious teenager; Krieg, a protective bodyguard; Tannis, an eccentric scientist; and Claptrap, a witty robot. Their paths cross when they encounter Lilith, a notorious bounty hunter on the hunt for Atlas’ daughter on the most disorderly planet in the cosmos. (The release date for Borderlands in cinemas is Aug. 9.)
The Last Front
Watch It in Theaters on August 9
During World War I, numerous devoted soldiers emerged, defending their homeland from threats and ensuring the safety of their families and communities. This theme is portrayed in the film “The Last Front” by Julien Hayet-Kerknawi. In this production, Iain Glen plays Leonard, a mourning father, who rallies his village to seek refuge during the chaos of war. Sasha Luss, Leander Vyvey, and Joe Anderson join him in this powerful story set for release on Aug. 9.
Alien: Romulus
Watch It in Theaters on August 16
The Alien franchise, famous for its groundbreaking films made by talented directors such as James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and David Fincher, is eagerly awaited by fans for a fresh and impressive addition to the science fiction horror series, which has seen a decline in recent years.
In the seventh addition to the “Alien” series, titled “Alien: Romulus“, which is set between the initial film (1979) and its sequel (“Aliens”, 1986), a new and thrilling narrative unfolds. This captivating tale follows a team of young explorers as they accidentally encounter one of the most dreadful life forms while exploring an abandoned space station. “Alien: Romulus” is slated for release in theaters on Aug. 16.
The Crow
Watch It in Theaters on August 23
Excitement has built up among fans for a long time over the return of “The Crow” movie franchise, and now it’s happening! Directed by Rupert Sanders, this new installment boasts Bill Skarsgard in the lead role. As the fifth addition to the series, it follows “The Crow” (1994), “The Crow: City of Angels” (1996), “The Crow: Salvation” (2000), and “The Crow: Wicked Prayer.” Here’s a brief summary of what to expect from this fresh take on the story:
Eric (SkarsgĂ„rd) and Shelly (FKA twigs), deeply connected souls, suffer a tragic end when Shelly’s haunting past returns with deadly consequences. With an opportunity to rescue his beloved partner, Eric embarks on a relentless quest for vengeance against their ruthless assailants. Undeterred by the boundaries between life and death, he journeys through both realms to set things right and seek retribution.
