As a die-hard fan of these incredible shows, I must say, it’s quite the whirlwind of changes happening in the One Chicago universe! The departure of some familiar faces like Eamonn Walker and Tracy Spiridakos leaves a bittersweet taste, but the arrival of new talents like Yoshida, Dermot Mulroney, KaDee Strickland, and Toya Turner brings a fresh wave of excitement.
Over the last few years, there’s been a lot of change within the One Chicago series, with each drama experiencing its fair share of upheaval. Actors from all three shows have frequently moved on to pursue different opportunities, including directing, producing, or engaging in various other ventures.
For each conclusion, there’s a fresh start, and each new beginning brings forth a crowd of new characters in the limelight. It could be a new chief gracing “Chicago Fire,” a detective joining the team on “Chicago P.D.,” or two doctors making their debut on “Chicago Med.” You’ll find plenty of familiar faces to discover more about. However, these shows will also bid farewell to a cherished officer, a dedicated firefighter, and an ardent doctor. Here’s a rundown of the actors joining the One Chicago universe this year… as well as those who are leaving it.
Chicago Med: Dominic Rains is Out
Actor Dominic Rains, known for his role in “Agents of SHIELD,” is set to bid farewell to the show during season 10, as announced by Deadline. The exact details about whether or not he will reappear to conclude Marcel’s storyline remain unclear. It’s speculated that, like other characters, Marcel could exit in a subtle way, possibly leaving viewers with a final, poignant scene during the Season 12 finale.
In this episode, Sharon Goodwin (played by S. Epatha Merkerson) shows kindness towards Crockett, offering him all the time off needed following a significant medical mishap. Crockett postpones a liver transplant for a child due to an infection in the donor, the boy’s father. Despite the father’s pleas to proceed, Crockett’s cautious approach leads to the child’s death and the father taking his own life shortly after. This incident seems to prompt Crocket to contemplate leaving Chicago Gaffney Medical Center. The future holds uncertainty about where he’ll end up and what actions he might take.
Chicago Med: Sarah Ramos and Darren Barnet are in
In Season 10, two fresh individuals, Sarah Ramos portraying Dr. Caitlin Lenox and Darren Barnet as an enigmatic pediatric resident, will make their debut. Dr. Lenox, as the new ED attending, intends to instill discipline in the team. The identity of the pediatric resident, played by Darren Barnet, remains a secret but is believed to have a puzzling past.
Ramos is primarily recognized for her portrayal of Haddie Braverman in NBC’s version of “Parenthood.” She has also appeared as Jessica, Cheryl Pistono, and younger sister Patty Pryor on various shows such as “The Bear,” “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” and “American Dreams.” As for Barnet, he boasts a number of supporting roles including appearances in the remake of “Road House,” “Anyone But You,” “Gran Turismo,” “Love Hard,” and “Glass.” On television, he is known for his recurring role as Paxton Hall-Yoshida on “Never Have I Ever.” Additionally, Barnet lends his voice to various animated series like “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory” (as Kenji Kon), “Skull Island” (as Mike), and “Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles” (in the title role).
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Allen MacDonald will be taking over as the new showrunner for the series. We’ll see how things unfold and how well everyone gels together.
Chicago Fire: Eamonn Walker is out as a regular
In the final episode of Season 12, titled “Never Say Goodbye,” viewers of “Chicago Fire” witnessed Captain Wallace Boden (played by Eamonn Walker) making a significant life change. This adjustment was necessary due to Walker’s decision to depart from the show as a regular cast member but continue making occasional appearances. Throughout the episode, Boden competed for and successfully secured the position of deputy commissioner, which required him to relinquish his role as chief. Before leaving, he expressed his deep appreciation for his crew, emphasizing their importance in his life.
In simpler terms, Boden’s affectionate farewell implies that Walker may not be regularly present during Season 13, but there’s a chance we’ll see him at some point. Whether his role will span many episodes or he’ll just pop up for key events is yet to be determined. Regardless, it’s encouraging to know that he’ll continue to provide comfort to Engine 51 in the future years.
Chicago Fire: Dermot Mulroney is in with KaDee Strickland recurring
It seems that despite Boden suggesting Chris Herrmann (David Eigenberg) for the vacant position, it appears he won’t be getting it. Instead, Dermot Mulroney has been cast as the new chief in “Chicago Fire”. Mulroney will portray Dom Pascal, a lively Florida transplant whose cheerful demeanor and style contrast significantly with Boden’s. He reportedly can get serious when needed and might be moving past his troubled marriage. Mulroney is an experienced actor, having worked on projects ranging from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” to “Young Guns” to “August: Osage County”.
Additionally, KaDee Strickland is set to join Season 13, playing the role of Monica, previously mentioned as Dom’s wife. Strickland has an impressive resume with roles in films like “The Grudge” and “Fever Pitch,” but she may be most recognized by “Chicago Fire” viewers for her character Charlotte King from ABC’s “Private Practice.”
In addition to this, Jake Lockett and Jocelyn Hudson have been confirmed as main cast members for Season 13. Given that their characters, Sam Carver and Lyla Novak, are growing increasingly significant within the team, it seems quite fitting.
Chicago P.D.: Tracy Spiridakos is out
It is clear to anyone who watched the Season 11 finale of “Chicago P.D.” that Hailey Upton, portrayed by Tracy Spiridakos, has chosen to break away from Chicago and explore different avenues in law enforcement. This decision comes after she willingly puts herself at risk as bait to capture Frank Matson, a serial killer who had Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) hostage in his basement. With Hank safely rescued, Hailey recognizes that her desire to join the police force has been influenced by her personal issues with her mother. She feels these matters have been resolved and decides to embrace a new chapter in her life.
Hailey decided to leave the show due to her curiosity about other acting opportunities, but she hasn’t ruled out a potential return in the future. Speaking with Deadline, she shared, “I adore this entire cast and crew, from producers to everyone involved. Making this decision was incredibly difficult for me. I’ve been part of the show for seven and a half years. I simply wanted to explore other possibilities and mix things up, but it was a tough choice. It was both bitter and emotional.” Whether she’ll return remains to be seen.
Chicago P.D.: Toya Turner is in
For the upcoming Season 12 of “Chicago P.D.”, Toya Turner, previously seen in “New Amsterdam”, has been confirmed as the sole new cast member. Turner’s character, Kiana Cook (formerly known as Yara Page during casting), is portrayed as a fearless and rough-edged individual who isn’t afraid to stand up to the bad guys. Given the series’ reputation for action on Chicago’s tough streets, it’s safe to say that she might find herself in some exciting situations.
Turner is particularly recognized for starring as Shotgun Mary in the series “Warrior Nun.” Additionally, she has made appearances on shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Mick,” “Easy,” and “Empire.” On stage, her performances include a role in “A Raisin in the Sun.”
We’ll see if Bojana Novakovic’s character Jo Petrovic gets promoted to a regular role following her powerful performance in Season 11. If not, we’ll have to wait and see how viewers respond to these fresh faces. Discover the fate of all three One Chicago dramas when their new seasons premiere on September 25.
