Every Superhero Multiverse Movie, Ranked

As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s grown up watching these characters come to life on the big screen, I must say that these films have truly been a rollercoaster ride! From Miles Morales’ journey in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which felt like a fresh take on the iconic character, to the witty banter between Deadpool and Wolverine, I can’t help but feel excited for what’s coming next.

Is there a different dimension where an alternate Chris Evans plays Doctor Doom instead of Robert Downey Jr., as depicted by another version of MovieWeb? The concept of multiple universes, or the multiverse, has been debated for centuries, from Greek philosophy to modern subjects like cosmology and physics. While many experts in these fields are intrigued by it, they generally view the multiverse as a thought-provoking idea rather than a verified scientific truth, because it cannot be directly tested or disproven.

Through ongoing debates among doubters and believers, the theory has picked up traction in the realm of storytelling. From the inception of films, creators and scriptwriters have experimented with the notion of alternative realities or multiple dimensions.

Over the past few years, there’s been a surge in interest for stories involving multiple universes, largely due to the proliferation of superhero films. Fans have eagerly anticipated appearances of alternate versions of their beloved characters, and producers such as DC and the MCU have seized this momentum. The recent joint release, “Deadpool & Wolverine“, employs this idea, but which superhero multiverse movies have truly stood out?

10 Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)

Scott Lang, along with his family, have a knack for delving deep into scientific exploration. In the movie Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, this penchant for experimentation lands them in a predicament once more, as they find themselves ensnared within the Quantum Realm – a subatomic universe that transcends both space and time. Here, they encounter peculiar beings and eventually cross paths with Kang the Conqueror, a war-mongering ruler aiming to dominate the multiverse. Following the standard plotline of a superhero film, they embark on a mission to thwart him.

Kang Is the Saving Grace

As reported by Box Office Mojo, the film “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” has struggled to recoup its costs, a rare occurrence among Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. Both critics and audiences have expressed disappointment towards it, and there are several factors contributing to this less than favorable response.

Despite Jonathan Majors delivering an impressive performance as the antagonist, the film seems to be missing some key flavorful elements, particularly humor – a disappointment given Paul Rudd’s knack for comedy. Additionally, it appears that excessive focus on worldbuilding has left the Phase 5 installment lacking in other crucial aspects.

9 Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse (2022)

As a die-hard fan of all things superheroic, I found myself immersed in an exhilarating crossover adventure titled “Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse.” In this thrilling tale, heroes hailing from distinct dimensions joined forces to tackle a crisis that threatened the very fabric of their reality.

In a recent turn of events, Lex Luthor has set free all the criminals of Metropolis with the aid of an amulet, establishing the Legion of Doom. He subsequently imprisoned Earth’s superheroes within the Phantom Zone. Consequently, the Teen Titans and Super Hero Girls find themselves facing a twofold challenge: vanquishing Luthor’s evil faction and rescuing their cherished heroic allies.

Too Much Action?

The animated series “Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse” follows a trend seen in numerous superhero movies, with an overabundance of action that overshadows engaging storytelling. Instead of delving into the intricacies of universe travel, it focuses more on fighting scenes, leaving fans wanting to know more about the multiverse concept.

Despite some initial issues, the movie manages to win favor by offering entertaining dialogue exchanges and top-notch animation. Each voice actor delivers impressive performances, but Tara Strong particularly shines as Batgirl.

8 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

In the film titled “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Doctor Strange embarks on a journey to understand mysterious dreams about America Chavez, a teenager capable of moving between dimensions. He enlists Wanda’s aid, unaware that she has turned villainous and intends to seize Chavez’s abilities to be reunited with her children in another reality. Struggling to safeguard Chavez, Strange winds up trapped on Earth-838.

Not Meeting Expectations

In “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Marvel Studios hinted at a more extensive experience than what was ultimately provided. Following the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” viewers anticipated a grand multiverse filled with exciting Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances. However, what they received fell short of their expectations. In essence, this film embodies the typical MCU style. Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen deliver captivating performances as the main characters, displaying charm and resilience.

Strange’s predicament contributes to the movie’s emotional depth, but it lacks elements that could have made this superhero film a timeless classic. Previously, Sam Raimi has delivered superior work, and perhaps he could have pushed himself harder in this instance. Unlike typical superhero flicks, there are no exciting fight sequences or witty remarks. Instead, it offers jump scares and brutal violence.

7 The Flash (2023)

In Andy Muschietti’s version of The Flash, everyday life details unfold into an intricate tale spanning multiple universes. A sorrowful Barry Allen journeys back to alter the past and prevent his mother’s demise, but ends up stuck in a different dimension where General Zod resurfaces with plans to devastate the world. This realm seems devoid of powerful superheroes, but fortunately, it also hosts Michael Keaton’s Batman. In this universe, Barry enlists Batman’s assistance as well as that of a distinct Supergirl.

Looking Beyond Ezra Miller’s Transgressions

Due to the scandals surrounding Ezra Miller, many morally conscious viewers initially shied away from watching The Flash. As a result, the movie struggled to attract large audiences at the box office. Despite this, it’s a solid multiverse film with an impressive opening scene and delightful cameos. The concise script is enhanced by clever humor and compelling friendship dynamics that make the team-ups engaging. For Batman enthusiasts, there’s a festive season-like treat in store here.

In addition to the portrayals of Batman by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, there’s also a brief appearance by George Clooney as the character Bruce Wayne, maintaining his charming playboy persona.

6 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

As I reconnected with Gwen Stacy, also known as Spider-Woman, my days in Brooklyn as the witty and amiable Spider-Man, Miles Morales, seemed filled with nothing but good times. But little did I know that these moments would be abruptly disrupted when I was suddenly whisked away to another dimension. In this strange new world, I found myself among a group of Spider-beings, each assigned to safeguard their respective universes. However, the harmony between us quickly deteriorated as we clashed on our approach to a critical decision, leaving us more at odds than united.

Across the vast cosmos, arguing and sometimes even physically clashing, the Spidermen slowly build respect for each other as they are compelled to confront a string of demanding tasks jointly.

A Fitting Sequel

From start to finish, the animated spectacle known as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” leaves viewers spellbound. With its visually stunning, graphic design-inspired animation and a plethora of hidden gems, it holds audiences captivated. This witty, exhilarating sequel showcases an array of warring, comically mismatched Spider-Men, all superbly voice-acted. Furthermore, compelling subplots, and memorable one-liners elevate the film to the highest echelons of animation action movies.

As a diehard fan, I was thrilled to see my favorite movie rake in nearly a whopping $700 million at the box office! It’s truly remarkable that a non-live-action production could reach such heights, showcasing just how captivating its storytelling and visual effects were.

5 Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)

As cool as The Flash is, he keeps making costly mistakes. He does so again in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, where his actions trigger a temporal ripple that forms an alternate reality where there is no such thing as the Justice League. Superman doesn’t exist either, since a young Kal-El was imprisoned by the U.S. Government shortly after his spaceship crashed into Metropolis.

Simultaneously, Aquaman and Wonder Woman engage in a significant conflict. Amidst chaos, Flash contacts Batman and Cyborg, seeking their aid to reestablish order in our universe.

More Faces, Greater Joy

The animated film “Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox” offers an enhanced, mouthwatering take on “The Flash,” featuring Ezra Miller in the title role. It boasts numerous cameos and showcases beloved DC Universe voice talents. Remarkably, C. Thomas Howell, a newcomer to voice acting, delivers a chilling tone to the twisted Reverse Flash’s voicebox.

Beyond simply adapting the comic’s storyline (a common practice among DC animated productions), this film significantly expands upon its basic structure. For instance, it presents a Batman capable of killing and maiming, and introduces a Martha Wayne transformed into the Joker. This multi-universe film offers a wealth of thought-provoking material.

4 Lego Batman Movie (2017)

In “The Lego Batman Movie,” fans journey into a vibrant Lego version of the broader DC multiverse filled with artistic landscapes, minimal realism, and dreamlike visual effects. In this world, Batman is quite elitist, preferring solitude over Batman-related activities. However, when he delivers his iconic line to the Joker about never mattering to him, the villain becomes enraged. Desperate for attention, the Joker frees all the dangerous criminals from Batman’s Rogues Gallery, which forces Batman into action.

Several Gags Per Minute

The film “The Lego Batman Movie” shines primarily due to its humor, which is rich and dense enough that some subtle meanings might be overlooked. It’s filled with numerous jokes, many of which are references to popular culture or callbacks to earlier Batman productions. In fact, every Batman production from the ’40s onwards is mentioned. Additionally, it pays tribute to other franchises such as Doctor Who, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, The Matrix, and Jaws.

3 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Disenchanted with his monotonous teenage existence, Miles Morales turns to graffiti art as a means to brighten his mood. On a subway ride in Brooklyn, he encounters a radioactive spider that bites him, bestowing him with peculiar abilities and transforming him into a revamped Spider-Man figure.

When this character encounters the first Spider-Man, Peter Parker, it becomes clear that multiple individuals possess the Spiderman powers at present. Subsequently, he is compelled to employ his abilities against Kingpin, a ruthless criminal lord capable of breaching the Multiverse barrier and recruiting alternate versions of Spider-Men.

Great Chemistry and Great Visuals

As a lifelong film enthusiast with a particular fondness for animated features, I must say that this movie captivated me from start to finish. The initial scenes were richly detailed and emotionally charged, setting the stage for an exhilarating cinematic experience. The second and third acts truly ramped up the excitement, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Miles, the main character, was particularly intriguing as he grappled with the immense responsibility that came with his newfound powers.

Apart from this, the comics-style imagery enhances the story’s credibility, delighting diehard fans with broad smiles. The animation is a blend of digital and hand-drawn techniques, giving off a cool, urban vibe. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is so impressive that Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, declared it as “the greatest Spider-Man film ever produced.”

2 Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

In the series featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, it is revealed that Deadpool’s timeline is deteriorating due to the actions of the Time Variance Authority, who plan to terminate it out of mercy. Mr. Paradox informs them that Wolverine was key in maintaining balance within this timeline, and with his death, the universe has become unstable. Unwilling to let this happen, Deadpool takes Paradox’s TemPad and embarks on a journey across various universes, seeking out a version of Wolverine who can assist him in preserving his own timeline.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Are a Match Made in Marvel Heaven

In the movie, Hugh Jackman and Hugh Jackman display an entertaining dynamic reminiscent of buddy cop duos, a fact not surprising since they’ve been trading playful jabs online for years prior to filming. Their performances are concise yet impactful, further enhanced by a strong narrative that effectively clears the palate after some less-than-impressive MCU films. If this trend continues, the franchise could potentially regain its former glory.

1 Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

In the beginning of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Peter Parker faces a significant predicament. Mysterio has exposed his identity as Spider-Man to the world. As secret identities are crucial for superheroes, he seeks assistance from Doctor Strange to make everyone forget this revelation. However, when Doctor Strange performs a spell to erase the memory, he accidentally opens up the barriers between universes, inviting the most wicked Spider-Man adversaries from other dimensions, along with the Spider-Men starring in the Fox films.

Reign of the Spider-Men

Following an initial focus on family-oriented scenes, the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home transforms into a suspenseful psychological thriller with bursts of action. The film primarily explores the intricate relationships developing among the heroes and villains. The bond between the three Spider-Men is heartwarming and leaves you pondering why this idea wasn’t considered earlier.

The entire cast delivers a powerful performance, with each member going beyond the basics. However, Tobey Maguire stands out as particularly noteworthy. Although it follows the typical formula of a superhero movie, this one leaves an indelible impact that lingers long after viewing.
