The Instigators
Stream on August 9
In “The Instigators,” directed by Doug Liman from my perspective as an enthusiastic viewer, I join Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck), two unwilling accomplices, on a comedic heist journey gone awry. With mounting pressures at home – a mortgage and overdue child support – Rory feels desperate to turn things around and mend his damaged relationship with his son. In a moment of desperation, he partners up with an ex-con, Cobby, for the seemingly simple task of stealing a corrupt politician’s ill-gotten gains. But as we all know, nothing ever goes according to plan. The heist takes an unexpected turn, leaving Rory and Cobby in the midst of a chaotic situation they’re not prepared for.
The duo is in deep trouble as not only the police are pursuing them, but also the irate bureaucrats they attempted to rob and vengeful crime bosses they’ve crossed paths with. Overwhelmed and desperate for help, they manage to persuade Rory’s therapist, Dr. Donna Rivera (Hong Chau), into aiding their escape by pretending to be their hostages. As they frantically try to elude capture, they must set aside their conflicts if they hope to make it through their failed schemes alive. The movie features the talents of Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow, and Ron Perlman. The Instigators will be available for streaming starting Aug. 9.

Pachinko (Season 2)
Stream on August 23
Using simpler language, “Pachinko” is a drama series based on Min Jin Lee’s 2017 best-selling novel. The story follows one Korean family’s struggle to survive and prosper from 1915 to 1989. The show jumps between different time periods, highlighting the determination of this family to succeed. Sunja (played by Kim Min-ha or Youn Yuh-jung) is the catalyst for their journey. In 1931, she leaves her Korean family in Japan-controlled Korea and moves to Osaka’s Koreatown in Japan. There, she starts a new life amidst difficult living conditions and discrimination against Korean immigrants.
After a long wait of over two years since its debut in March 2022, the highly praised show “Pachinko” comes back with a new season, resuming Sunja’s journey and her encounters during World War II. In this upcoming season, we will get to know more about Sunja’s grandson, Solomon Baek, portrayed by Jin Ha, as he embarks on a new business collaboration with a Japanese entrepreneur. The intricate plot of “Pachinko” Season 2 is set to unfurl an engrossing narrative spanning several decades, making for an enthralling viewing experience. You can stream the second season starting Aug. 23.
