As a seasoned movie buff with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Tom Holland‘s career is nothing short of remarkable. The young British actor has managed to carve out an impressive niche for himself in the Hollywood landscape, and his journey as Spider-Man is truly captivating.
Following his debut on the big screen in 2012’s “The Impossible,” a true-life disaster film, Tom Holland’s life underwent a significant transformation upon being chosen for the Spider-Man role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This actor has since become highly sought after in Hollywood and enjoys immense global popularity. Remarkably, even though he achieved his greatest success by embodying Peter Parker and his superhero persona, Holland hasn’t been limited to only that character.
Over the past several years, he’s been featured in numerous blockbuster productions, making it clear that he’s a proven star in both films and television. Some of his recent triumphs include “Uncharted,” “The Devil All the Time,” and the Apple TV+ miniseries “The Crowded Room.” Given this track record, it’s no surprise that he has several upcoming movies lined up for the next few years. Here is a rundown of all the film projects we know he’s involved in, as well as some potential ones that might feature him.
American Speed
Titled “American Speed”, this upcoming drama chronicles the lives of three prosperous race car drivers who, unveiled later, were entangled in a drug trafficking scheme to sustain their racing endeavors. The project, which garnered interest during a bidding war, was secured by Amazon MGM Studios. Notably, Tom Holland and Austin Butler have been cast for significant roles within the storyline. Additionally, Charles Roven, known for producing successful films like “Oppenheimer”, “The Dark Knight”, and “American Hustle”, is also involved in this production. This collaboration between Holland and Roven marks a second time they’ve worked together, following their project in 2022 titled “Uncharted”.
Screenwriter Dan Wiedenhaupt is set to pen the script for the upcoming movie titled “American Speed.” Given that it’s inspired by true events, we have some insight into the storyline. The Whittington brothers were a group of three racing drivers who found themselves entangled in a scandal involving the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) during the 1980s. They were convicted on multiple charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering, using the ill-gotten gains to sustain their racing careers. As of now, neither Amazon MGM nor Atlas Entertainment have revealed a director or disclosed the start date for filming or the expected release of “American Speed.
Untitled Spider-Man Sequel
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t hide my excitement about the Spider-Man films from Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ever since the debut of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” back in 2017, these movies have been nothing short of a blockbuster hit, raking in close to $4 billion at the box office. It’s safe to say that another Spidey adventure was bound to happen, and I couldn’t be happier about it! When I sat down with Deadline, I shared my enthusiasm by saying, “The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films.
It’s been rumored that “Spider-Man 4” might involve an unexpected alliance between Spider-Man and another iconic Marvel character yet to be named. As of now, details are scarce. However, it was reported in September 2024 that Destin Daniel Cretton, director of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has been in talks to helm the movie. This appointment was confirmed when Disney announced the film’s release date, which will be after “Avengers: Doomsday” (slated for May 1, 2026). Production for the next Spider-Man sequel is slated to commence in summer 2025.
Untitled Christopher Nolan Project
In October 2024, news surfaced that Christopher Nolan was developing a movie for Universal Pictures. Although he had a strong history of collaboration with Warner Bros., his exceptional achievement with “Oppenheimer” in 2023 appears to have persuaded him to continue working with Universal, the studio behind that film. Scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, following production kickoff in early 2025, the as-yet-unnamed project is designed for IMAX screens. The director has revealed to the Associated Press that he’s working with IMAX on innovative technology and preparing it for filming.
Information regarding the film remains limited, as Nolan is famous for keeping his films’ narratives under wraps. However, what we do know about the storyline is that it will not take place in the current era, hinting at a historical or futuristic backdrop. Since the project announcement, it has been confirmed that Tom Holland will play a significant role in the movie. He joins forces with Charlize Theron and Matt Damon, who are reteaming with Nolan after their roles in “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar.” The cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong’o, all of whom have been confirmed to be part of the film.
Untitled Fred Astaire Biopic
Since as early as 2021, there have been whispers about Tom Holland potentially taking on the lead role for a Sony biopic yet to be named, focusing on the life of renowned dancer Fred Astaire. Later, it was confirmed by the actor himself that he had secured the part, which came as no shock since he has a history in dance. You see, his first major role was playing Billy Elliot in the West End musical “Billy Elliot” from 2008 to 2010. Additionally, he honed his gymnastics skills and has shown off his impressive dancing abilities on multiple occasions, most notably during an episode of “Lip Sync Battle,” where he danced to Rihanna’s “Umbrella” in a performance that spread like wildfire online.
For about two years, there wasn’t much update regarding the project, which might suggest slower-than-anticipated progress, despite Sony announcing in 2023 that Paul King, known for “Paddington” and “Wonka,” would direct the movie. In the same year, King also confirmed he was collaborating with writer Lee Hall on a fresh script, and some plot details have been revealed, such as the film’s focus on the dancer’s relationship with his sister Adele Astaire.
In simpler terms, Holland stated that the project is progressing and scripts are being developed. He mentioned this during a Critics Choice Association press conference (as reported by Yahoo). “Discussions are taking place,” he added, “Just like any film industry endeavor, whether it eventually comes to fruition is uncertain, but we’re pushing forward as if everything is on track.
Beneath a Scarlet Sky
2017’s novel “Beneath a Scarlet Sky” penned by Mark Sullivan recounts the tale of Pino Lella, an adolescent Italian lad, who aids Jews in evading persecution and subsequently spies on the German High Command for the Allies after being conscripted as a driver for a notorious Nazi officer. This widely-read book is rumored to be grounded in reality, incorporating romantic threads between Pino and Anna, a widow he encounters during his courageous endeavors.
Since 2017, Holland has been associated with the project, following the announcement that Amy Pascal’s production company, Pascal Pictures, had secured the rights to the novel. Previously, Pascal and Holland had collaborated as producers on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Spider-Man” films, suggesting a longstanding partnership between them. However, there has been scant information about the project in recent years, making it unclear whether it is still ongoing or if it has been shelved.
Hey there fellow movie enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from the summer of 2024 – Imperative Entertainment, the team behind “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is diving into a film adaptation project! While I don’t have all the details yet, I can’t help but wonder if our favorite duo, Holland and Pascal, will still be part of this new venture. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing development! 🎥🍿 #MovieNews #ImperativeEntertainment #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon
Uncharted 2
Starting in 2007, “Uncharted” has been one of Sony’s most valuable treasures in their PlayStation collection, thanks to its characters we love and exotic settings inspired by “Indiana Jones.” The movie adaptation was long overdue, but finally arrived in 2022 with Ruben Fleischer directing and Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. Despite a divided critical response, the film earned more than $400 million, suggesting a sequel is likely – considering the enthusiastic audience response. Given Sony’s ownership of the intellectual property, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them capitalize on this well-known and beloved franchise.
Despite limited official updates regarding “Uncharted 2,” Sony has confirmed they are developing the film, mentioning it alongside the live-action Zelda adaptation during their CineEurope presentation in June 2024. Since then, the studio has kept quiet about “Uncharted 2,” not sharing any details on the storyline or cast, but Tom Holland is expected to reprise his role. In an interview with Deadline in December 2024, producer Charles Roven revealed that while work is progressing, filming probably won’t start immediately due to Chris Nolan’s movie featuring Tom and Zendaya.
Avengers: Doomsday
When the fifth “Avengers” film was first announced, it was titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” However, Disney and Marvel Studios changed their plans after actor Jonathan Majors faced charges, eventually revealing the revised movie as “Avengers: Doomsday.” Scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, the film will now center around Doctor Doom instead of Kang the Conqueror. The surprising news that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU was also announced, but details about his return as Doctor Doom and how it fits into the franchise are yet to be clarified.
Similar to many upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films, specifics about “Avengers: Doomsday” are currently scarce. However, there’s speculation that Tom Holland might have a significant role, possibly serving as the film’s lead protagonist. It wouldn’t be unexpected if Spider-Man, played by Holland, plays a crucial part in this Avengers movie, considering his fame and strong bond with Iron Man, portrayed by Downey Jr. The emotional connection between them in the MCU, which resembles a father-son relationship, could make any on-screen meeting more impactful, even if Downey’s character is depicted as a very different, malevolent one.
Avengers: Secret Wars
“Avengers: Secret Wars” marks the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) saga, serving as a direct sequel to “Avengers: Doomsday.” Much like its predecessor, specific details about “Avengers: Secret Wars” are scarce at present. However, we do know that the Russo brothers will be back in the director’s chair, and Stephen McFeely, co-writer of “Avengers: Endgame,” is penning the script. As for Spider-Man’s part, it remains uncertain; what’s certain is that the Fantastic Four will play a significant role in this upcoming adventure.
It doesn’t necessarily imply that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man won’t play a significant role. In the MCU we commonly watch, only a handful of the initial Avengers are left standing. Given Spider-Man’s familiarity and popularity in the movie franchise, having him around helps maintain continuity while introducing less recognized characters to the audience. There have been whispers online hinting that Holland’s Spider-Man might face off against the Peter Parkers portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in some capacity.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
Despite some challenges with Sony’s more recent projects that are connected to Spider-Man, they achieved a significant success with the well-received “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” in 2018. The sequel, titled “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” was released in 2023, and while the third movie, tentatively named “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” doesn’t have a set release date yet, there are ongoing whispers that Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker might appear in both its cast and storyline. This possibility isn’t entirely implausible since the “Spider-Verse” films feature numerous versions of Spider-Man from throughout the franchise.
In other words, since Sony owns the cinematic rights to Spider-Man, one might assume they wouldn’t have a problem featuring Tom Holland’s version of the character in the upcoming third film. However, the situation isn’t as straightforward and the rights aren’t entirely clear, even though Sony collaborates with Marvel Studios on the standalone Spider-Man films within the MCU.
It might be wise to consider bringing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker into the mix, given his expressed interest in portraying Miles Morales within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and potentially mentoring the alternate Spider-Man character. Additionally, hints from concept art of the second film suggest some intention for MCU Spider-Man to make a brief appearance, indicating a willingness to involve Holland in some capacity.
