As a devoted comic book enthusiast who grew up during the Cold War era, I have been captivated by the enigmatic world of Watchmen for decades. Each adaptation offers its unique charm and intrigue, but for me, the 2019 HBO series stands out as the most gripping and poignant.
In 1986, a trio consisting of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins from Britain brought to life the comic book series Watchmen. It’s an intriguing tale set in a different reality where superheroes made their debut in the 1940s and ’50s. Their existence subtly influenced historical events, resulting in America winning the Vietnam War and avoiding the Watergate Scandal exposure. Yet, life wasn’t perfect; by the ’80s, superheroes were banned and tensions between America and the Soviet Union were escalating towards a potential World War III.
Just like many other notable DC Comics titles, Watchmen has been transformed for both television and film a number of times. What makes this unique is that its original author, Alan Moore, expresses disdain for all screen adaptations, going so far as to state he “would never watch any screen versions of my work.” This distaste isn’t due to the quality of the adaptations, but rather his strong opposition to how the entertainment industry often utilizes comic book writers’ stories without providing fair compensation.
Even though Moore’s lamentations are understandable, fans have found it hard to resist the adaptations because they are all excellent. But how do they rank against each other?

‘Tales of the Black Freighter’ (2009)
The animated movie “Tales of the Black Freighter” was a companion piece to Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”. This film is inspired by the fictional pirate comic within the original “Watchmen” comic book series. The story revolves around a Sea Captain (voiced by Gerard Butler), who grapples with mental struggles as he journeys home following unexpected pirate attacks during his voyage.
In the initial script for the live-action movie, that particular storyline was planned. However, due to the estimated $20 million cost of creating it with the 300 CGI style Zack Snyder initially envisioned, it was moved instead into DC’s animated realm. Additionally, the animated version was intended to be part of the final edit, but it was ultimately left out because the film was already quite lengthy at 163 minutes.
A Tiny Slice of Animation
In a riveting and honest portrayal of life at sea, this piece never misses its mark. Unlike the film, it faithfully employs Moore’s witty dialogue, a decision that makes us resonate more deeply with the Sea Captain. His poignant lines, such as “Adrift, my darkest thoughts surged unbridled, flowing from mind to heart like indelible black ink,” carry even more weight when spoken by Gerard Butler.
As a devoted enthusiast, I must say that “Tales of the Black Freighter” is simply captivating, appealing to both comic aficionados and pirate movie devotees alike. While comic fans might lament the animation not mirroring Gibbon’s artwork, it still offers an engaging experience. In just 26 minutes, the film is brief, yet it manages to avoid feeling insignificant. Time spent with this tale won’t feel wasted.

‘Watchmen: Chapter I’ (2024)
In the story “Watchmen: Chapter I”, there’s a murderer at large, specifically targeting superheroes. After the well-respected superhero, nicknamed the Comedian, meets his end, Rorschach takes on the investigation, hoping to uncover some answers. However, instead of finding any progress, things take a turn for the worse as he himself is apprehended and falsely accused of the murders. The movie closely follows the events of the first five issues from the original comic series.
A Faithful Adaptation with One Major Flaw
It’s hard to find someone more suited for this task than Brandon Vietti. Known for his work on Batman: Under the Red Hood, where he portrayed a ruthless villain, he brings the same intensity here. Watchmen: Chapter I mirrors its source material in grandeur, with impressive action scenes and sharp dialogue that never skimps on the essentials. Unfortunately, the voice acting can be inconsistent, switching between overly dramatic and natural tones.

‘Watchmen: Chapter II’ (2024)
In the world of vigilantes and law enforcers, ending up behind bars is their deepest dread. Regrettably, this dread has become a present-day ordeal for Roschach in “Watchmen: Chapter II“. As soon as he’s confined, he starts to experience torment, much of it from inmates whom he and Nite Owl had previously apprehended. Fortunately, fresh leads surface, propelling the heroes towards the true culprit.
A Slight Improvement
In Chapter II of Watchmen, the pace is significantly faster and there’s an increase in action sequences, which helps distract from some of the less impressive voice acting. The narrative kicks off immediately when Rorschach steps out of prison, much like the first movie. As before, the animation remains remarkable, showcasing Gibbons’ original vision while incorporating color adjustments that were possibly beyond the artist’s capabilities in the 80s. Fans of the comic can rest assured as the storyline closely follows the source material.

‘Watchmen’ (2009)
The plot of Watchmen mirrors its comic book origins and both 2024 animated versions, but with a distinctive Zack Snyder flavor that includes breathtaking visuals and a melancholic atmosphere. During the peak of the Cold War, we delve into the lives of these superheroes as they unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of Edward Blake, more famously known as “the Comedian.
The movie faced numerous hurdles during its production phase, having multiple directors involved. Notably, Terry Gilliam departed from the project, stating that the intricate comedy was deemed impossible to bring to life on screen. However, where one individual may struggle, another can succeed.
One of Zack Snyder’s Greatest Hits
The live-action movie makes an impact through its compelling narrative and thought-provoking themes. Geopolitics frequently surfaces, and surprisingly, we witness a complex portrayal of Richard Nixon, often perceived as tough and dedicated, yet unyieldingly ruthless, who managed to win the presidency four times with an unwavering confidence in his success. Moreover, the Cold War’s intricate maneuvers unfold as these superheroes strive to identify the culprit disrupting their tranquility.
“The impact of Watchmen on the DCEU can be seen in its influence, as it demonstrated that complex and dark superhero stories could succeed financially ($187 million at the global box office). This success led to Zack Snyder being given creative control over the ‘Man of Steel’, which shaped the direction of the DCEU.

‘Watchmen’ (2019)
34 years following the comics’ storyline, this “Watchmen” series revolves around the topic of modern-day racial violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The white supremacist group called the Seventh Kavalry stirs up conflict against the local police force, prompting officers to don masks for protection. Driven by an intense thirst for vengeance is the detective, Sister Night (Regina King), who seeks justice in the wake of her friend’s and the police chief’s deaths.
Damon Lindelof, famous for his work in ‘Lost’ and ‘Mrs. Davis’, acted as the main producer. Unfortunately, he decided not to be involved in the second season because he felt he had told all he wanted to about the story, which led to a temporary halt in the series until more information is available.
Another Great Addition to HBO’s Vault of Unmissable Hits
Alan Moore preferred not to receive credit but might have enjoyed the show had he chosen to watch it. Damon Lindelof delves further into this Emmy-winning superhero series (11 awards), starring the captivating and exceptionally talented Regina King. Unlike past adaptations that were haunted by the echoes of the Cold War, HBO’s Watchmen carves a niche for itself in contemporary society by extensively exploring racial prejudice.
This series stands out compared to others that are overly heavy-handed. Instead, it brims with vigor, both dramatically and visually. It effectively communicates its sharp psychological and sociopolitical messages with a powerful lesson on the hazards of discrimination.
