Alright, it’s the new year… let’s talk about Nosferatu.
Although the highly anticipated horror movie for 2024 premiered on Christmas Day, I had to hold off watching it for a couple of days. On New Year’s Eve matinee, I ventured out in the frosty weather to catch the chilly film titled “Nosferatu” – a movie that seems to have generated enough buzz to fill an entire ship with plague-ridden rats by now.
Initially, I must confess my anticipation was high, given the hype I had seen on the web. However, the film managed to win me over, particularly since I’m a big fan of top-tier horror films.
Although this film had elements that were undeniably disturbing, there was a unique romantic connection that captivated me more than the fear-inducing aspects. Today, let’s delve deeper into this intriguing relationship.
The Movie Itself Was Well-Made And Really Terrifying (In Certain Ways)
To set the record straight, I’d like to share that I found myself quite captivated by the film “Nosferatu“. Contrary to how it might seem, I wasn’t indifferent towards it from start to finish. In truth, I had anticipated a fast-paced, blood-curdling vampire flick that would haunt my dreams. However, what I got was something entirely different – a suspenseful horror movie with a more subtle build-up.
I’ve watched a lot of gothic films in the past, but this one was undeniably the most authentically gothic I’ve seen in years, and it was executed masterfully. The locations were impressive, the ambiance was fitting, and the costumes matched the era perfectly. Everything about it was outstanding.
It was my anticipation, based on interviews and previous readings before the release of “Nosferatu”, that the movie would be quite disturbing. Given Emma Corrin’s involvement with numerous rats and Bill Skarsgard’s aversion to playing such an evil character as Count Orlok, I was expecting this film to give me quite a fright.
In the end, it turned out to be an effectively acted gothic horror movie that sustains a tense atmosphere throughout its duration. The movie had numerous instances where I found myself exclaiming internally, “Don’t go there! What are you doing? You’re smarter than that!” while anxiously awaiting a fright. Although it did contain some jump scares, the film primarily made me feel uneasy rather than genuinely scared, which seems to have been Robert Eggers’ intention.
As a devoted admirer, let me add that a sight I could do without repeating is Nosferatu in all his bare glory. Truly, it was one of the most chilling scenes I’ve ever witnessed in a movie. And to be frank, it was quite gruesome. Thanks for sharing this spine-tingling experience!
The Entire Cast Acted Incredibly Well, But Lily-Rose Depp And Emma Corrin Knocked It Out Of The Park
It was clear to me that the cast of “Nosferatu” was destined for greatness, and they certainly delivered. Nicholas Hoult is an actor I’ve long admired, and this performance would definitely be among my favorites. I can’t wait to see him take on more horror roles in the future. His portrayal of fear is simply outstanding.
Similarly, it’s no surprise that Bill Skarsgard excelled in his role as the main antagonist. After all, he had already proven his talent as the leader of the IT franchise, portraying Pennywise the Clown. Regardless, he delivered an outstanding performance once again.
But I have to say…Lily-Rose Depp shocked me, and Emma Corrin rocked their role.
Johnny Depp can certainly act well, yet I didn’t anticipate her delivering such an impressive performance in a horror movie like this one (excluding Tusk, which feels more like a comedy to me), given its high intensity and discomfort level. Her leading role in the HBO series The Idol served as a powerful springboard for her career in acting, as she delivered a commendable performance (despite the fact that The Idol had great potential but ultimately fell short).
In her role as Ellen in Nosferatu, she delivered a performance that truly marked a significant milestone in her career. This demonstrated her versatility, showing she could convincingly portray diverse characters – from a vibrant pop star to a terrified gothic woman, who was possessed by an evil vampire. I can’t think of two more contrasting roles, yet she pulled it off spectacularly well.
I’ve consistently admired Emma Corrin’s acting skills, and their portrayal of Princess Diana in “The Crown” was particularly captivating. Moreover, they delivered an exceptional performance as Cassandra Nova in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. This role seems to be a significant milestone in their career. In the movie under discussion, although Anna may not have been as influential as other characters, she served as a beacon of guidance for Ellen amidst all challenges. As I watched more of their scenes together, I genuinely felt the deep-rooted friendship between Anna and Ellen.
The Friendship Between Ellen And Anna Really Hooked Me
I found the terror of “Nosferatu” to be expertly executed, but what truly captivated me was the friendship between Ellen and Anna in the movie. Here’s why:
1. Their bond added depth and emotional resonance to the story, making it more relatable for the audience.
2. The dynamic between them evolved organically throughout the film, providing a compelling subplot that complemented the main narrative.
3. The actresses portraying Ellen and Anna delivered captivating performances that made their friendship feel authentic and believable.
4. The exploration of their bond offered a unique perspective on the story, as it humanized the characters beyond the horror elements, allowing viewers to connect with them on a deeper level.
In gothic films, friendships between women are seldom depicted, typically favoring horror or romance themes. These movies usually keep us focused on their dark interiors, at least from my perspective. Yet, there were glimpses of their friendship that I truly appreciated.
Ellen shares her aspirations and apprehensions with Anna, and Anna strives to provide support – truly doing so, yet it’s challenging when she doesn’t entirely grasp the situation. Nevertheless, it’s evident that she empathizes and cherishes Ellen – as demonstrated by allowing Ellen to sleep in her bed at one point during the movie, despite Thomas disapproving of this.
She deeply values their friendship and hopes Ellen recovers soon. Despite Ellen experiencing nightly spasms, Anna urged her spouse to discover a solution for her relief. It’s not common, and I found myself drawn to it.
I Wish That Anna Didn’t Die As Quickly As She Did
It’s clear that this is Nosferatu. To be considered among the greatest vampire films, it needs such deaths. However, I regret that Anna had to perish… or at least not so abruptly.
It was truly unfortunate that Anna was the one who fell ill and was ultimately taken by the rats, followed closely by her children’s untimely deaths. In hindsight, it would have been preferable for her to survive longer, despite my feelings towards her eventual demise.
A desirable scenario for me would be to witness a deeper exploration of the bond between Ellen and Anna, and observe how their relationship evolves over time following tragic events such as the loss of her spouse and children, instead.
Instead, what we observe is a positive situation, but I believe it could have been even more engaging if we delved into how these events impacted the friendship between Ellen and Anna.
While the main plot may not be the focus of this film, it’s those pivotal scenes that truly elevate exceptional horror movies above their less memorable counterparts, turning them into timeless classics. Delving deeper into the dynamics of friendship could have potentially introduced an intriguing narrative shift, but for now, I’ll hold onto that thought as a potential future exploration.
After catching “Nosferatu”, I can’t help but ponder which other chilling horror flicks are on the horizon that I should keep an eye out for. It seems it’s high time to start mulling over the next spine-tingling film to become utterly captivated by, as I patiently wait for my friends to experience this one first.
