The 10 Worst Comedies of the Last Ten Years (2015-2024)
10. Yoga Hosers (2016)
Kevin Smith has often asserted that excessive marijuana usage boosted his creativity and work output. However, in 2023 when he stopped consuming cannabis, he presented a slightly altered narrative, stating it was a means to mask a deep emotional wound stemming from childhood abuse. In a video on the topic, Smith humorously addressed those disappointed that Silent Bob would no longer smoke by saying, “Sorry. ‘Silent Bob should be smoking weed!’ He wasn’t. He didn’t when he made those movies.”
If there is an example of an anti-drug message in cinema, it is the film “Yoga Hosers,” a painfully funny production about two Canadian convenience store clerks (Smith’s daughter Harley and Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp). They become entangled with a peculiar Quebecois detective (Depp himself) and sentient Nazi sausages called Bratzis (portrayed by Smith himself). The plot is incoherent, and the humor primarily relies on overplayed accents and jokes about Canadians saying “eh” frequently. I’m relieved that Smith is now sober, not only for his wellbeing, but also mine. As a longtime fan of Kevin Smith who still appreciates his early (funny!) comedies, I hope he experiences a successful comeback someday.
9. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015)
As a movie enthusiast, I must say the original “Hot Tub Time Machine” wasn’t Shakespearean literature, but it cleverly intertwined a self-discovery narrative amidst the rowdy antics of a group of friends grappling with their mid-life crises. The first film had successfully resolved the emotional turmoil of its characters, leaving not much for the sequel to address except for increasing the number of splashed bodily fluids and hot tub water. In the second installment, three out of four leading actors from the original found themselves inexplicably transported into the future, in search of a mysterious assailant who wounded Rob Corddry’s character – unfortunately, John Cusack, one of the original “Hot Tub” stars, didn’t return for the sequel and was replaced by Adam Scott portraying his character’s son. The creators of “Hot Tub Time Machine” were fortunate to pull off that concept once; such a bolt of comedic inspiration seldom strikes twice, even with a time-traveling hot tub!
8. The Ridiculous 6 (2015)
Adam Sandler’s partnership with Netflix has been around for quite some time now, yielding several decent movies. I enjoy “Leo”, “Hustle”, and even defend the goofy yet heartwarming “Hubie Halloween”. Regrettably, Sandler’s Netflix agreement kicked off on a rocky note with the comic western “The Ridiculous 6”. Despite boasting an impressive cast that included Terry Crews, Will Forte, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Harvey Keitel, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, and others, the film failed to elicit a single chuckle in its western setting, despite having so many talented individuals trotting across the prairie.
7. Mother’s Day (2016)
During the later years of Garry Marshall’s career, he found commercial success by creating ensemble comedies featuring attractive individuals finding love across different holidays such as New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and most notably, Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, Mother’s Day was not as intentionally humorous as the film titled Mother’s Day that preceded it, which was a violent horror movie. The silence I experienced during the comedy screening of Mother’s Day in the theater was almost deafening, a level of quiet usually associated with a Benedictine monastery, not a bustling multiplex.
6. The Happytime Murders (2018)
Brian Henson’s risqué puppet comedy, titled “The Happytime Murders,” is filled with adult humor and sex jokes that some might find amusing, but it seems the creative team behind this film didn’t delve too deeply into its production. For trivia buffs, this movie features Melissa McCarthy biting a puppet on the penis, and Joel McHale staring at a puppet’s vagina in a nod to the famous scene from “Basic Instinct.” However, it is Maya Rudolph who truly shines in this film. She effortlessly delivers a rice pilaf joke that has earned her hero status among comedy enthusiasts. Rice pilaf, indeed! That woman is remarkable.
5. Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
In the movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” Warner Bros. portrayed itself as a heartless conglomerate of intellectual properties controlled by an antagonistic AI, which was quite a humorous self-criticism in the film industry. The overall quality of the movie was so weak that it made the original Space Jam seem like a masterpiece such as “2001: A Space Odyssey.” LeBron James isn’t a bad actor by any means, and he doesn’t do worse than Michael Jordan did in the original film. However, almost everything else about “A New Legacy” was a disappointment from start to finish. The movie seems to lack understanding of what makes Looney Tunes, particularly Bugs Bunny, so appealing. Unfortunately, they turned Bugs Bunny, an icon of American comedy, into an unfunny whiner in the film. It’s almost illegal to produce a movie where such a legendary character as Bugs Bunny is this unamusing.
4. Dirty Grandpa (2016)
The film “Dirty Grandpa” adopts a similar comedic approach as “The Happytime Murders”: By juxtaposing characters that are perceived as pure or innocent (grandfathers) with crude and explicit language, it aims to create humor. If hearing Robert De Niro utter words like “smegma” amuses you, then this movie is for you. However, if your humor preference leans towards well-crafted jokes (or avoids constant homophobia), you may find yourself underwhelmed. The title, at least, accurately represents the content of the film.
3. Marmaduke (2022)
If there’s an animated movie uglier and less visually appealing than Marmaduke, I haven’t seen it. And I hope I never do! This film looks like it was made as part of a money laundering operation or one of those weird deals where producers have to create something by a deadline.
However, despite the terrible animation quality, Marmaduke boasts the voice talents of some genuinely funny, well-known actors such as J.K. Simmons, David Koechner, and Pete Davidson. Did they not read the script? Didn’t they see the hideous characters they were supposed to voice? Were they each offered a private island in exchange for their services? How did this happen? Marmaduke is just plain garbage. I wouldn’t wish it on the kids on my school bus who used to tease me by inventing booger songs, which, come to think of it, were more creative than this Marmaduke movie.
2. The Emoji Movie (2017)
Imagining an interesting film about smartphone culture or even emojis isn’t far-fetched, but such a script would need more wit and bite than what ‘The Emoji Movie’ offered. Leaving aside its somewhat positive message about accepting diversity, the movie is exactly as you’d expect from a studio tied to a tech company that relies on annual smartphone sales for its profitability: A subtly marketed advertisement that hints at using a phone to gain popularity and attractiveness among girls. Yuck.
1. Dolittle (2020)
In the style of Tim Burton’s Batman, where a back-street doctor botches a chemical facial repair on Jack Napier, resulting in the grotesque visage of the Joker, Dolittle is similar. It’s like watching a film adaptation of that chaotic scene; an unappealing, disjointed mess that appears to have been pieced together from leftovers and re-takes of something originally quite different. Initially, it seems (we can only guess) that this was intended to be a more serious production. However, it morphed into a cinematic Frankenstein’s creature, filled with bathroom humor, animal puns, questionable CGI, and Robert Downey Jr.’s over-the-top performance, which makes Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, seem shy in comparison.
