Prior to portraying the Rebel scum and former Imperial stormtrooper FN-2187 (also known as “Fin”) in the latest Star Wars trilogy, John Boyega had already made a name for himself as an emerging actor, particularly in several low-budget movies. Among these, his performance in the 2011 British sci-fi horror comedy “Attack the Block” (available for streaming on Peacock) has garnered the most enduring fanbase appreciation. This is partly due to Boyega’s captivating portrayal of Moses, a street hustler with a quick wit who teams up with his unconventional teenage gang to defend against an unexpected alien attack.
Since then, both John Boyega and director Joe Cornish have achieved greater fame, with Cornish contributing to Marvel’s Ant-Man script, directing and writing 2019’s The Kid Who Would Be King, and creating the 2023 mystery thriller series Lockwood & Co. However, due to Attack the Block’s lasting popularity as a cult favorite among many eager fans, Cornish announced in 2021 that they were planning an Attack the Block sequel, with Boyega set to return as Moses.

What do we know about the Attack the Block sequel?
Ever since the 2021 announcement, Cornish has provided some comforting hints about the type of “Attack the Block” sequel he and Boyega aim to produce. Notably, he’s not rushing the project, valuing quality over speed in crafting a worthy follow-up to the original film.
In 2023, Cornish shared his approach for creating a successful sequel with Discussing Film: “A good sequel is simply a well-made film.” He emphasized that a poor sequel often arises when the creators are merely trying to capitalize on the initial movie. However, he assured us that such accusations won’t apply to their project, as it will likely be released 15 years later. The key is to produce an exceptional film and tell a captivating story that resonates with you.
As a gamer, I can’t spill all the beans, but rest assured that bringing back John Boyega, who’s now in his 30s yet still feels like a teen from our first adventure, won’t cause any headaches regarding continuity for the kind of sequel narrative I have brewing up.
In the interview from 2023, he clarified that the tale they intend to share focuses on Moses as an adult rather than his childhood years. The elapsed time is crucial for the narrative and it couldn’t have been told five years earlier but it can be now, or even in five years from then… I consider myself fortunate because the 18-year-old newcomer [Boyega] has grown into a 30-year-old globally recognized film star.
It seems like Cornish is determined to attend to every minor detail – going so far as to work at a slower pace, if necessary – in order to make sure that the sequel to Attack the Block matches the meticulous craftsmanship of its low-budget indie forerunner.
Cornish revealed to SYFY WIRE in 2023 that they are immersed in research for the screenplay. One aspect that they believe contributed to the success of the first film was the blend of fantasy and reality. They conducted extensive research for the initial movie, and they’re doing the same for this project. At present, they have a storyline, a detailed treatment, and are gathering all the necessary research to transform it into a screenplay. Since Attack the Block was his first film, there was no pressure to rush its release. He took his time to perfect the script then, and he plans to do the same for this one.
Considering all that has been discussed, it’s understandable that we haven’t heard anything about when the follow-up to “Attack the Block” might hit cinemas just yet. In the interim, why not revisit John Boyega’s pre-“Star Wars” fame in the initial “Attack the Block,” now streaming on Peacock here.
