The Apple TV+ series “Silo” has begun impressively with a commendable 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating for its second season. The narrative revolves around Juliette Nichols, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson, who is a skilled engineer living in an underground shelter in a post-apocalyptic world. Following her compulsion to step outdoors, Juliette uncovers that there are other similar shelters. Exploring an abandoned one, she encounters an intriguing man named Solo, whose role becomes pivotal in her tale of survival.

Who Is Solo, and Why Is He in the Vault?

Initially, Solo, portrayed by Steve Zahn, makes an appearance when Juliette encounters a vault within the latest silo. A melodious tune emanates from this location, drawing Juliette towards it. Despite the password-protected door being locked upon her initial attempt to open it, she steps away. However, a man then reveals himself through a rectangular peephole, causing him to become visible for the first time. Although he appears harmless, his speech carries a sinister tone. He warns Juliette that he’s aware of her trying to open the door, and if she attempts it again, he will take her life.

Juliette makes efforts to prove to Solo that she intends no wrong, yet he remains obstinate. He categorically denies her entry into the vault and also refuses to emerge himself. Nevertheless, he places food bowls before her, suggesting a touch of kindness within him. His speech, however, conveys an air of innocence and childlike simplicity.

In Episode 3 of Season 2 titled “Solo,” viewers delve deeper into the character’s background. He reveals details about his past confined within a silo and his reasons for being inside the vault. Following the uprising, Russell, the IT chief, had Solo, his IT apprentice, locked away in the vault, instructing him to keep it sealed shut for all eternity – no exceptions. Since then, Solo has adhered to this command.

A Tale of Two Rebellions

Solo shares with Juliette the origin of the uprising: once, a man stepped outdoors and chose not to clean, instead, he scrawled “deceptions” on his camera lens. This led others to think it was safe to venture outside as they hadn’t witnessed him perish. This scenario echoes Juliette’s personal tale, causing her to ponder the possible consequences of her actions. By not cleaning and going out of sight, she may have instilled false hope in everyone that the world outside is verdant and beautiful. A revolt could be stirring within her silo, potentially endangering all her loved ones.

Currently, Juliette is in a state of great urgency as she recognizes that if she doesn’t return promptly to alert them, everyone might be venturing outside under the false assumption that the land is safe for habitation. Unfortunately, she requires a containment suit since she tore hers apart while escaping. It appears that only Solo has the capacity to aid her in this situation.

Solo gives Juliette the idea of using a firefighter suit, but her initial excitement quickly dissipates when she realizes the floor where the firefighter suit is located is under water. Sensing Juliette’s increasing frustration, Solo finally comes out of the vault at the end of the episode. But the meeting is far from what Juliette might have expected and hoped for.

It’s clear that Solo hasn’t been around for a while. Juliette assists him in overcoming his shyness and hesitance to cross a bridge, but it becomes apparent how deeply wounded he is when he admits that he wasn’t certain if she was genuine all along or merely a product of his imagination.

What Steve Zahn Has to Say About Solo

In an interview with Radio Times, Steve Zahn hinted at the depth of his character, Silo, from one of Apple TV+’s top shows, without giving away too much about its future plot. Zahn explained that the name fits him well as “he’s been through a lot and found himself stuck in a certain place.” He further revealed that societal norms, such as communication, self-expression, emotional display, and social interaction, are all foreign concepts to his character, having lost relevance and meaning for him.

In the narrative I’m following, it seems that Solo and Juliette are developing an intriguing bond, as they both have mutual desires and requirements. I sense that Solo will extend a hand to Juliette, possibly aiding her in acquiring and constructing a secure suit for her to venture outdoors again. She is convinced that catastrophe is imminent, and she’s racing against time to return to her silo and prevent an avoidable uprising among its inhabitants.

However, it’s quite challenging for him. Solo harbors a deep distrust towards others. For an undisclosed period of time, he’s been isolated in the vault, living alone. He’s managed to self-educate using books and images, sustain himself with food, and amuse himself with music. But it seems likely that he hasn’t interacted with any humans.

Should Solo’s allegations about being the IT shadow indeed be validated, this implies he possesses substantial knowledge about the silo. Given this situation, if there’s anyone who could potentially aid Juliette, it would likely be him. Yet, will he choose to assist? And can he conquer his own apprehensions and suspicion, or will they prove overwhelming? These queries will be addressed in the forthcoming episodes of the season.

What to Know About Solo From the Book

For those eager to avoid plot twists, it might be wise to halt your reading here. For others who’ve previously read Hugh Howey’s trilogy or are unfazed by spoilers, they’re already acquainted with some of Solo’s hidden past. In the books, it’s disclosed that Solo has been isolated in the vault for not merely years, but decades. This implies that he was just a child when the rebellion took place and has spent significantly more time alone than Juliette had thought. It also sheds light on his innocent demeanor and behavior, as he missed out on growing and maturing under adult guidance for nearly his entire life.

Eventually, Solo helps Juliette learn to interact with other silos, if you follow the storyline from the books. This results in her communicating with Lukas (played by Avi Nash), who in her silo had become her casual friend. Readers of the series will recall that at the end of Season 1, Lukas was sent to the mines for his part in the hard drive incident that resulted in Juliette being exiled. We’re yet to discover how he gains access to a device for communication.

In the novel, we learn that the character named Solo’s real identity is Jimmy Parker, and he was the lone survivor of a rebellion within his silo. Yet, it remains uncertain if the upcoming TV series will adhere to this plotline, so viewers must stay tuned for updates. It’s plausible that Solo’s character could undergo significant changes in the Silo television series compared to how he is portrayed in the Wool, Shift, and Dust books.
